Even the stone faced Evander Holyfield was scared to fight Tyson. He almost cancelled the fight with Tyson three weeks into his training camp. Thats why he uncharacteristically danced his way into the ring in the second fight as well. Tyson presented a different kind of fight. There was no feeling out process, it was a fight from the opening bell, so thats something most fighters were not used to nor were they sure of what could happen if they got caught cold or not warmed up.

I also quoted that from an excerpt from the book by Peter Heller

I feel Holyfield KNEW Tyson wasnt what he once was, thats why he was desperate for the match. He knew he had enough in the tank to beat Tyson in 1996.

I cant emphasise the difference between pre prison and post prison Tyson. But some people believe he was still the same

I am not sure he has one career defining fight??? I think the fights he did not have Ruddock 89, Holyfield 89-90 had he fought and won would have been just that...as it is he has what I call a nice resume that he ran through in dominating fashion, but lacks that huge win along the way.

I think the general consensus unlike in the Spinks fight, was that Holyfield was completely washed up. If Tyson defeated Holyfield in his first fight the Spinks win would still stand out as the most impressive of his career. Holyfield looked terrible against Bobby Czyz. That fight left a horrible impression of Holyfield in most peoples mind. He was supposed to stop Czyz in one round. Instead Czyz was nailing him and hanging in there.

The Spinks win was huge at the time. Even after defeating Douglas, Holyfield was still a question mark against the likes of Tyson. Very few people thought Douglas would perform like he did against Tyson and it wasnt because of Holyfield, Douglas was just mediocre.

I think post Foreman, Holmes and Bowe, Holyfield would have represented Tyson's career defining fight.

I agree, i think Bowe and Holyfield would have contriubted more to his legacy. Lewis wasnt really a major force until the mid to late 90s

The "Ruddock" Tyson still had enough in the tank to beat, Foreman, Bowe and Holyfield.

Post Prison Tyson was just a cardboard cut out

yeah, my point was though, that to discredit the win even if Spinks (or any other opponent) was scared is pretty outlandish imo. So what if he was scared? Is that what it's coming to now? If he was scared it was because of Tyson's ability and nothing else.

Bowe would have represented a very stiff challenge for Tyson in 91.

Right, I dont know how being scared can diminish a win, unless its a total tank job like the Seldon fight. Spinks at least tried to fight and was laid out with his eyes rolling to the back of his head.

I know, but thats exactly the sort of fight that would have pushed Tyson up a level.

I believe Holyfield was much more resilient than Bowe. However in 91, Holyfield was way too small and would have been mowed down.

Bowe gets hit too much for my liking and Tyson may just have been his kryptonite. Considering Bowe didnt fight any punchers, i dont know how he would have reacted against Tyson

I agree. Its the biggest load of crap ever told. "Tyson only won because people were scared of him"

but nobody ever seems to say why they were scared in the first place?

Its because he was THAT good.

Which Tyson opponent commented that "Tyson at that time (at his peak) was like all your worst nightmares come true" ??

you are speculating though, you know that don't you? There is no evidence to say that Tyson is taking Bowe in 1991, none at all. This is coming from one of the biggest Tyson fans ever, so don't get it twisted. Everybody knows how much I worship Tyson.

Bowe is definitely presenting a hellacious task for Tyson.
