Tyson's prime years...

I tend to group these 3 fights together but he looked better against Ruddock than he did against Bruno for sure. Either way, still nothing compared to the Tyson from the Tubbs fight...and Tubbs was arguably better than all 3 of the guys mentioned above.

 

From about the Marvis Frazier fight of 1986 to the Spinks fight of 1988 was when I felt that he looked the best. In addition to a drastic change in both training staff and management, which led to his deterioration, there was also a change in attitude. I think Tyson was really starting to believe the claims of the fans and the press that he could not be beaten. And furthermore seemed to select his friends from adolescence, as companions during training, rather than the professionals whom he should have been surrounded by. The ugly divorce with Robin Givens, the car wreck that followed, the Mitch Green debacle and the flooring incident in sparring with Greg Page were all signs of bad things to come.

 

I go with the consensus here. Tyson's prime was 1986-88.

 

His prime was Berbick to Spinks but by Spinks he was already starting to slide mentally ...

 

I don't think so, he had his man hurt and was going for the kill with winged hooks just as he would under Rooney. His head movement was back against Rudduck

 

His balance was ****, he was telegraphing punches and falling down. How much worse can it get. Horrible performance.

 

It doesn't mean anything because he had his man out and was looking for a big hayemaker finnish, hence he went wild and swung for the fences

 

The whole fight was a mess. Yes he caught the guy, but as we saw down the line that kind of style only had him taking a lot of punishment, ie the Ruddock fights. Tyson was not using much technique and was counting on bombs to take fighters out.


Listen to what Giachetti was screaming in the corner. Jab Jab. Tyson was just walking in not using any kind of technique to setup his shots. It may have ended things well against Stewart, but that kind of technique was not going to work against better fighters.

 

Well basically. Cayton was warning Mike about Robin Givens and her mother, Tyson wasnt listening and had the mindset that everybody was out to get her. Rooney, stuck up for Bill Cayton and basically both were given the sack, Don King was also in the mix, he had to get rid of Cayton and Rooney and then got rid of the 2 women as well.

Also i dont know if anybody knows this, Tyson originally decided to leave Rooney out for the Bruno fight as punishment and then take him back aftewards, however by then Rooney had filed a lawsuit against Tyson which then really ended it.

 

Thats just Tyson being a dick. Deep down, he KNOWS hes a moron for what he did throughout his career. He doesnt like to admit it
Ive heard him say, Biggs, Bruno, Douglas, Ruddock were his best fights.

Under Kevin Rooney he was what something like 37-0, go figure

Back in New York things were also happening, Kevin Rooneys attorney arrived in US District Court in Albany, New York, and slapped Mike Tyson with a $10 million dollar lawsuit on Rooneys behalf, claiming breech of contract. It was based on what he said was an oral agreement that he had to be Mikes trainer for life, with a set fee of ten per cent. Coming when it did, the lawsuit was impetuous and ill advised. Tyson had been saying 'Kevin is my man', and making it clear he intended to reconcile himself with his trainer followng the Bruno fight., which he was making Kevin sit out as a sort of punishment. Now he was furios. He said Kevin 'just did something unprofessional' by speaking out on matters involving Mikes personal life, but now, suing the champion, Rooney had gone 'out of his way to make it personal. Now hell never be involved with me again, never'. Rooney fired back that Tyson had never even called to discuss the matter with him, that he only read about it in the newspapers. 'What was i supposed to do, sit around like a jerk?' asked Rooney. '**** him. Hes a jerk,' said the dismissed trainer.
