I was born in 1989 so i wasnt around to see Mike Tysons rise, only his fall. I was wondering what was it like at the time, the media, the hype etc, it must have been incredible and exciting to witness such a young animal blasting his way through the HW division the way he did. All views appreciated
He was the most exciting and devastating. But lots of glass jawed brits here will claim that Lennox was the best as usual.
When Mike Tyson became known to me during his rise and peak i couldnt think of anybody that had any chance to beat him. I dont know another fighter that was so intimidating a prospect for anybody. In his rise and prime he was the most formidable boxer i have ever seen.
Tyson used to drink milk before a fight and when he entered the ring he had a white milk stain above his lip. Other boxers made fun of him, calling him Baby Tyson but then he knocked them out. Soon all the boxers started coming into the ring with milk stains to be like Tyson but Tyson decided to stop doing it and so came in with black trunks instead.
he was the most exciting prospect i've ever seen, he had people glued to his fights by the time he fought berbick for the wbc title. by then, everyone on the planet knew tyson, they knew they were watching a fighter who was about to go in the ring and attempt to rip his opponents head off in the 1st minute of the fight. where did this type of fighter go? the likes of tyson, hearns, benn, mcclellan, jackson, mugabi used to go in the ring and look to decimate an opponent from the 1st bell. who do we have fighting today that goes out and fights like that?
Gamboa started out knocking contenders left and right before his 10th fight, he became well known in boxing circles doing what Tyson did, but when some defensive holes made him retool his arsenal he became this mover who's still devastating, but not the bob and weave little monster anymore. Lemieux had a little Tyson attitude in him, I wonder where does he go from here, and Roman Gonzalez is someone short handed who likes to get inside on you and make you disappear. Different to Mike in many ways, but Ortiz is a guy who comes in with bad intentions and a huge threat in the opening rounds, but if he can't get the early KO his intensity and killer attitude drops.
