Yeah, I need to read up on his career. I know that he was an amateur star who some saw as a future heavyweight champion, back when he was 210-215 (saw an article from his amateur days that called Broad "sleek"!). Knocked out Marvis Frazier early in the first round at the 1980 Olympic trials but then lost a close decision to him early in his pro career. He already looked a little soft at 228 during the Frazier fight, but he certainly had the frame to carry 230-235 pounds well, with better strength and conditioning work.
The Broad win over Frazier in the Olympic Trials was a huge upset. Frazier was 56-1 going into that fight. His only loss was to Tubbs, who he also beat. When Broad hit him just after the opening bell, it damaged a nerve in Frazier's neck that had been tweeked before. When Marvis went down, he couldn't get up because he couldn't feel his legs (he was paralyzed). Like really paralyzed. He said he was staring at his dad and his legs didn't work. He ended up having surgery on his neck before he turned pro. There was always a noticeable scar running down the back of his neck when there was a closeup between rounds. Broad was a decent fighter. But the win over Marvis was kind of the result of a freak injury.
