Mike Tyson height 5′ 11+″ reach 71″ 215 lbs Sonny Liston height 6′ 1″ reach 80+″ 212 lbs Both fighters excelled at relatively short fight lengths. No one, if anyone, ever backed prime Liston up. Will Tyson stand in front of Liston and try to box some, or will he try to duke it out with Liston at short-range from the "get-go"?
Not to nitpick but I always thought Tyson was the sharpest at about 215 or 216 lb. I think Mike would have to go right at Sonny Liston and fight his usual fight. If Mike hesitates or loses the edge of his aggression he is a dead man walking against Sonny Liston. The more time and room he gives Liston just throw that jab and those power shots behind it the worse it's going to be for Tyson
There wouldn't be any technique in this fight. The moment their eyes meet at the stare down it would become one of the craziest brawls in boxing history. Might even end in a DQ and heavy fines for both men.
I think you named the thread incorrectly. Did you mean to say, 'Tyson's technique in being beaten by Liston'? Anyway, no harm done.
Tyson only has one way - he beats you with his strengths or he doesn't beat you. Liston doesn't offer much in the way of lateral movement and would be forced to let his hands go early or be overwhelmed by Tyson's early round fury. Tyson's early aggression and speed moving forward would make this a war.
Personally I would pick Liston, but the only shot Tyson has is if he gets really, really close to the man imo and just tries to ko him. I can’t see him winning a boxing match at range or anything like that.
That's how I've always seen it. The two of them would skip all the preliminaries and go right into the brawl to end all brawls...before they ever got to the ring.
I see big big problems for the d'Amato defense anytime taking on Liston. Tyson will do the same thing he was taught---just like Patterson. dip left and throw. Or do the dip left/right/left thing and throw. This is what he does when he bends down in that crouch. Predictable. And he springs up from the crouch to throw. How much trouble did Liston have finding Patterson coming out of that crouch? Most opponents fired right at Tyson and missed because of those quick movements. And then Tyson cleaned up.Same with floyd---fired at him instead of where he was going to move to. Liston did not do that---he threw those punches to the place and position he'd be moving to & not at the target. And who wants to get hit clean by a lefthook from Liston and in effect, beat to the punch?
I think Sonny Liston would have to force Tyson back. F Liston can take away Tysons for momentum and leverage then he's a great chance to win. Tyson was quicker and was unconventional, a very fast starter. If he can use those things to his advantage he may be able to stop Sonny Liston early but honestly can go either way.
