VERY big show just announced by Watanabe for New Years Eve. I've got to admit I'm not a huge fan of some of the opponents but hey it's going to be nice to see Uchiyama and Kono back in the ring after what must have been a very crappy year for the pair of them http://www.asianboxing.info/asian-n...guchi-will-fight-in-a-new-years-triple-header
With the risk of sounding foolish and ignorant, I can admit that I've never heard of Uchiyama and Kono's opponents... Just glad that they are fighting at all, I guess. Japan could and should have a huge 2015! I'll be interested to see if they have the usual competing cards on New Years' Eve in Japan this year.
I've got to say the same. I read those names and went "who the eff?" but after the year both have had with numerous issues it sort of makes sense to have them in easy and work towards a big fight in 2015. At 115 the WBA dropped the ball with the whole Koki situation and the JBC put them in the place but it was Kono who lost out, big time. At 130 Uchiyama has apparently been in talks with almost everyone and nothing's come of it. Vasquez apparently didn't want a rematch and other fighters were turned down by TV whilst Nakamura was on the verge of getting the shot before losing to Ito. We'd have all liked the Miura rematch but Miura has been messed around as well and now with Mikey vacating the belt it's been a crap year. Ioka are apparently set to announce a New Years Show to be aired on TBS. Rumour is that Kazuto is in talks with Reveco, if Reveco beats Yodmongol, and Estrada. Ioka Vs Estrada looks like suicide to me. Miyazaki would likely have loved a fight with Rossell but has missed out there, he maybe able to sneak a shot at an IBF belt with Mendoza I guess? The Ioka card, if/when, won't feature Masayoshi Nakatani but may have Sho Ishida I guess...
Hmm... Agree with all of that. I know Uchiyama and Miura have had some difficulties that seem beyond their control. As for Ioka/Reveco, that'd be a good fight and winnable for Ioka. I don't see Estrada losing to anyone at Flyweight other than Gonzalez with how he has looked the last couple years now. Styles favor Estrada heavily, too. Would be impressed if Ioka took on either of them, though. I would even be a tad bit surprised if Ioka fought them, honestly. I was expecting a fringe-contender/top 10 guy, not one of the titlists yet for him.
I would assume the only way Ioka gets a NYE fight would be a world title fight. Like the Super Bowl adverts they are hard slots to come by. Ruenroeng is apparently wanting to defend his IBF title in Thailand so he's been ruled out but that would make more sense than Estrada.
Don't know if it would sell or if Ioka's management would approve, but I would totally support Ioka fighting Moruti Mthalane (looooong underrated and too seldom seen in the ring these days). He only holds the IBO title, but there's a reason TBR still ranks the man 4th at Flyweight despite recent inactivity. I think Mthalane probably beats him, so I doubt Ioka jumps on that since no recognized world title would be at stake for the gamble to be worth it, unfortunately.
I think there was talk about Mthalane Vs Oliva II, don't know if they are still in talks about that one but Oliva gave him REAL hell when the two met earlier this year
Yeah, I read that too and did see their fight. Was disappointed in my boy Mthalane. I guess a rematch is in order, but with Mthalane's career (like fellow South African, Joyi) problems and low paydays, you'd think he would jump at a chance to face Ioka. And I doubt he would be anywhere close to as expensive as the other possibilities. Then again, like you say about the need for it to be a title fight and high profile, I guess it doesn't make that much sense.
Respect to Uchiyama... Honestly, I've got to say, I did expect more of him for the last two years. I guess it's based on my respect for him and how I view his "H2H ability." There haven't been more than a couple fighters at 130 since Uchi won the belt that I've fancied as even being able to make a close fight or that I would have to debate about a prediction over.
