Uchiyama was supposed to fight Jorge Solis last January 10 but Solis caught a flu on the week of the fight... Now Jorge Solis got the Yuriorkis Gamboa fight for March 26... Lucky flu ...

Had stuff to wake up and do in the morning, but it looks like this was well worth it for those of you who did stay up!

Takashi's defense actually isn't that bad for the most part; he rolls with some punches, parries some, and uses footwork to avoid some. It's just that habit of dropping his hands anywhere further than mid-range. It's as though he thinks that if you aren't standing toe-to-toe it isn't necessary to cover up. Very strange. We'll see if he learns from it.

That KD shot was just a perfect lead left delivered by Miura out of that low crouch, and would probably have knocked most people down if they didn't have their hands up.

So it seems the stoppage was determined necessary by the doctor, due to cuts ruled to have been caused by a punch? That would be a TKO, if I'm not mistaken...yet it's listed as RTD8 (as though Miura or his corner had verbally quit, rather than had it taken out of their hands by the physician and referee which seemed to be the case). :think

It was well worth watching! :good
I didn't have to stay up for it though, was watching it live at work (first bout from round 10 on) in the afternoon.

I can't wait to watch both fights later after work.

I'm a huge Uchiyama fan and it's great that he won against a solid puncher.

We all thought Lee was good after beating Kratingdaenggym...is this seen as a good win for Shimoda or does it just raise more questions about Lee?:huh

It is a good win for Shimoda.

But let's see what performance he will show us from now on.

It doesn't really need to be either, IMO. Or rather, a little from column A and a little from column B.

It's a decent win to set Shimoda apart on the silver-medal podium of his domestic scene at the weight for now (just behind Nishioka, obviously); not so much a really good alarm-sounding win or anything to put the world scene on notice. It doesn't so much raise new questions about Lee as it simply puts things in perspective: he was good enough to beat Poonsawat on the night, but isn't himself unbeatable...even in his own country.

There was no reason to ever think of Lee as unbeatable or the "next big thing" in the first place. He picked up a nice win unexpectedly, and people took notice (and rightfully so). One nice win, however - as we've learned over and over in this sport - isn't cause to get carried away. Any time someone dives in and makes a splash, you always want to watch them swim a few extra laps before forming any solid opinions. It always takes at least a 2nd look (against a quality opponent), because flukes do happen.

In parallel: Linares looked really good before his loss to Salgado. That doesn't mean Salgado became some titan just for knocking him out. It put him in the same boat as Lee after having beaten Poonsawat. Then when Uchiyama beat Salgado, it was simply a "nice win" like this one for Shimoda...but we needed to see more because Salgado wasn't all that proven other than the Linares upset (like Lee wasn't all that proven other than the Poonsawat upset) and it was, again, just one nice win. We've since seen Uchiyama continue to look really good against fair opposition, which is why opinions have remained high on him and his having dominated Salgado (who, in hindsight seems to be a solid, dangerous B-level guy) does not appear to be a fluke.

It isn't as though the Poonsawat win made Lee "the man" of the division in any sense (certainly not Lineal or recognized undisputed Champ). It was a surprise, but it wasn't Tyson-Douglas. Poonsawat himself was quite well-regarded but not seen as some invincible beast.

So, Lee established himself as a good fighter with a nice win over someone who was well regarded. Then Shimoda in turn established himself as a good fighter with a nice win of his own (but of somewhat lesser prestige, on account of Lee not having been as thoroughly proven as Kratingdaenggym; and of course you have to allow for "styles making fights" and avoid ABC logic - for all we know Poonsawat could box Shimoda's ears off head to head).

It wasn't even all that big an upset, really. Other than Poonsawat, there wasn't a heck of a lot between Lee's resume and Shimoda's heading in.

Really good fight. :good It's pretty mind-blowing that it wasn't even the FOTN.

I really dig Sugar Shimoda's style.

You very rarely see a Japanese boxer bob and weave with anywhere near that frequency or efficacy. Hell, he's prime Tyson in that department compared to most of his peers.

He's actually a nice total package...stylistically he's sort of a tiny southpaw SRL (obviously scaled way down in both size and talent, but of all his namesakes he's much closer to Leonard than to Robinson or Mosley). Light years away from having his face up on the Mt. Rushmore of Sugars, obviously - but good, fun style and the skill to execute it successfully.

That knockdown in the 5th was dead sexy. He catapulted that overland left in a perfect little arc behind and tight to his shoulder, and Lee never saw it coming...resulting in that sickening impact and the classic pitch-forward fall. I replayed that a few times. :yep
