UFC 130: Frank Mir vs Roy Nelson - who will win and how?

Probably Mir on points but I'd love to see Nelson via ko

 

I think Roys got this. Franks takedowns suck, so Roy will punish him on the feet. As instictive as Frank pulls off a sub on the ground, he's quite the opposite on the feet imo. He's improved alot but Kongo & Nog were there to be hit, but the difference will be Roy can take it

 

All depends on what Mir shows up , the very best Frank Mir , IMHO has more tools than Roy Nelson and finishes the fight , thats just my opinion !!!

Nelson while he looks disgusting physically is actually quite fit and holds down a decent enough output to give Mir problems on the feet , wrestling and JJ nothing really seperates them , they have average wrestling and strong JJ , Mir could present Nelson with problems off his back , something he was never gonna do against Carwin or Lesnar but i dont see Roy looking for a TD , i think he likes his chances on the feet !!!

If Mir secures a TD it will be very very interesting to see what happens , if he can control and dominate the JJ exchanges from the top position Nelson is cooked ......... and likewise Nelson is a solid BB and has a strong top game , its a very evenly matched fight .

In summary , Mir holds an advantage on the feet (very slight) in terms of technical striking , and who knows physically what Mir we are gonna get , his weight will be an indication of what shape he's in , ideally id like to see Frank @235 - 245 , lean and mobile , if he is , its a Mir TKO round 2 G & P !!! , but like ive said its a pick em

 

If Kongo fought Nelson in a kick boxing match he'd brutally beat the **** out of him , Nelson's stand up is effective in MMA terms , but very flawed technically , Kongo is a much better all round striker than Nelson , and the only way Nelson punishes Mir standing up , is if he sets a pace Frank is uncomfortable with from the off , and mixes his attacks with some dirty boxing and TD's , and maintains that pace , a possible scenario depending on Mir's condition !!!

If Roy & Kongo both belly flopped off a diving board Roy would make the bigger splash!
You said all I need to say in your second sentance. Roy is more effective.

You look at Mir's career and pretty much every single match he's ever won was either an early finish or a total domination. Almost every time he's taken signifcant punishment he's caved in and lost the match.

Roy maybe isnt an elite HW but he's tough to put away and normally manages to land something decent on pretty much everyone he faces.

 

Mir tries to imrove his stand-up a fair bit, but for me Nelsons overhand right is the deadliest weapon either possess on the feet. Roy throws it with bad intentions.

On the ground they're both top-notch. Nelsons horrific physique often mask how well-versed he is on the ground. Mir of course good with subs, but I just fancy Nelson to do more work and pull out a points win. I think he has a bit more grit, as well as one of the best chins in the division. He is tough as ****.

 

It will be interesting, when was their grappling match?

One thing I didn't say is this is a good fight. They're pretty evenly matched, there will be really good exchanges on feet and ground IMO. Nelson will not let Mir control the action consistently IMO, and Mir will unravel as we get into the third. Nelson takes that to win 29-28, outworking Mir.

 

I'm not sure about this fight. Mir at his best (Nog fight) might be too athletic and technical for Nelson, but then again he maybe only looked that good because Nog was injured/sick/whatever. Nelson is a lot more consistent and consistently tough and, somewhat at odds with what people are saying here, has great timing and distance in his boxing game. I think they're both good enough at BJJ not to get subbed, and I think Mir has a GNP advantage, at least early. If I had to put money on it I'd pick Nelson just because you always know what you're going to get, and the longer the fight goes the better the odds will get.

 

I understood the post, and I'll say it again. Roy uses his strikes more effectively than Kongo. Unless you count nut shots :deal

 

mir is heaps better on the ground. roys not **** but he beat him because mir actually tried a few things and got tired while nelson played to his strengths, smothered and played a heavy top game. id still pick frank in 95 out of 100 sub matches between them.
ironically that match is very similar to how id expect their fight to go. nelson will spend the entire first round fending off submissions, frank will become gassed and dicouraged then roy will finish all over a dead tired and mentally broken mir.
