UFC 131: Is StrikeForce Causing the UFC to take Notice?

I only watch UFC heavys when Brock Cain JDS or Carwin are fighting. The rest for me are irrelevant. And i only watch Brock because im a wrestling fan. The rest are just your usual recycled UFC heavys.

 

So if you don't bother to watch them how do you know they're no good?

 

Both Lesnar title defenses were huge fights last year as was the interim title fight between Mir-Carwin. JDS looks a possible star for the future while Nelson, Mitirione and Schaub all showed more than many felt they would coming off TUF. Struve and Barry are flawed but have lots of potential. When you consider how weak the division has been for much of the Zuffa era you could certainly say it was its best year ever. Business wise it certainly was. And now we get three really cool heavyweight fights in the space of two weeks plus the very interesting Schaub-Cro Cop.

Now this is not hating on Stirkeforce - they have a very good heavyweight division and the two divisions are FAR more equal than another weight class. But it really puts my back up when people (not you) try to claim that the Strikeforce roster is so obviously superior to the UFC's when most of the fighters in it are either veterans coming off losing runs or periods of inacitvity or equally untested prospects.

 

I agree Will, Im just disappointed by Mir v Cro Cop and and Carwin v Brock. Both fight kinda ended with a whimper.
But the future is bright for heaveyweights. And the division as a whole in both orgs is becoming more well rounded and competitive

 

Im not insulting any of these fighters but i think the fact they are TUF products and doing so well immediately is evidence of how weak the UFC HW division is. Obviously im not saying that some one from TUF cannot become a good/great fighter, this would just be plain stupid. However, no one out of any other TUF series, in other divisions, came out and a year later are considered a big part of that weight class. Just a sign that the UFC need to start strengthening that division i simply dont have the time or inclination to get into a UFC VS SF debate i just think its something noteworthy.

You know Scruey...some fighters have a bad performance but then go away look at what they did wrong, correct those mistakes and so improve. And some fighters have an awesome performance but physically decline or a previously hidden flaw is exposed and so they don't look that impressive again.

In short its ****ing stupid to pretend that you can stop watching fighters for a prolonger period of time and understand what level a figher is performing at.

 

Because i need to give Nog CC Mir and the rest of the flotsam at the bottom of the UFC division the benefit of the doubt? Look stop waxing philosophical. Your argument is pish.

 

Don't get me wrong Scruey...I agree entirely. Its why I think Overeem is terrible - I stopped watching him in 2007 so he's just some crappy fighter who went 1-4 in five fights. Fighters never rebuild there careers after a bad run...nor improve. Nope not ever.

 

Yes the results agree with your opinion. Much the same way that CC Nog and Mir are rebuilding right? Oh wait a minute...

 

I didn't say CC Nog Mir were rebuilding...I said that its stupid to pretend you can understand where a fighter is without watching their recent fights

 

Whatever Will Cockring. Your arguing for the sake or arguing. I didnt watch CC v Mir. Turned out i didnt need to because i read the result and post fight write up. Amazing little feat of engineering MMA publications post fight interviews and websites are.... But i see what you did there....

 

If UFC start putting females as joint main events or as the support bout on the main card that's when I turn off for good. Who cares about woman's MMA?

 

Obviously the UFC has better marketing and better talent in most divisions, but when it comes to heavies, I'd pick SF's top 8 to beat the UFC's top 8, by about 5 to 3. Meaning it's noticably better, but not by a huge amount.

 

Best fights i ever watched live was a Womens Muay Thai tourny. Although it can be pretty hard watching the fairer sex beat on each other i have no issues watching Cyborg or Gina Carano fight.
