It looks like his corner told him to kick and he did it out of instinct. I don't think Yan wanted to commit the foul on purpose. He was in the heat of the moment and he heard his corner.

 

Yan was taking over and had stuffed all but one of Sterling's 20 takedown attempts. Who doesn't think Yan was on his way to a legitimate stoppage victory? Peter proved he is the superior fighter.

But there has to be an immediate rematch, I can't see any other way this gets concluded to everybody's satisfaction, even Sterlings.
