I thought it was called 'butterfly guard', but it really doesn't matter. You are right, it's uncommon. The reason its uncommon is its extremely difficult to do and prevent your opponent from passing. Especially against a guy like GSP, who is in an elite class of 'passing guard'. It really displayed Penn's unbelievable capabilities on the ground.
Butterfly guard is when you ankles are in between your opponent's thighs. I'd say what bj is doing is just safe for him considering the fact that he's really good at it. He can push the opponent off of him at any moment and still do any move that a closed guard allows. BewareofDawg is pretty spot on why its "uncommon." I'd add that its also not that easy for everyone to put their feet on opponents hips while so close.
The spider gaurd that BJ uses is more common in gi technique because when combined with some gi grips it gives you great control for sweeps. It's just an open gaurd that trades off ease of passing for more hip control. BJ can make it work because he is good enough. Anderson Silva uses it all time as well. Not really uncommon at all.
You're right, he does. When you say 'not uncommon', who do you mean? Not uncommon for BJJ Blackbelts, or in MMA in general. Because Anderson and BJ are both extremely versed in BJJ.
#1 It was a good show, although all the quick one shot KOs aren't really that exciting. #2 Penn looked damn good, but all this praise is a little silly IMO, especially all this talk about how he'll own Sherk. Treating the GSP and Hughes fights as if they were wins just because he looked good for a while doesn't make sense; he lost them both. Sherk has been an animal at 155 and as others have said, he's a cardio machine. I'll be expecting Penn to win, but I think this will be a GREAT fight and I can't wait. I'll be shocked if it's anywhere near as easy as Penn's wins against Pulver or Stevenson.
Fast Forward this video to 5min 30sec in. Check the move BJ pulls to take this guys back :yikes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFCwxVHFBPQ
Its not how BJ did against Hughes and GSP..Its how Sherk did against Hughes and GSP. Those are two separate analysis that suggests why BJ will be heavily favored for this fight amongst insiders and a slight fav for TUF fans.. I know its MMA math but the reason it works is because there is pattern and trend involving multiple common opponents.
Anyone who is at least intermediate in BJJ will have typically have learned at least spider and butterfly and worked them enough to be familiar. So in the BJJ/grappling world it's common. Most guys choose not to use it extensively in MMA because the lack of a gi jacket makes it easier to pass. When guys go for a sweep or set up a submission you see them move into feet on hips all the time for short periods.
I was gonna post that it allows him to manuever into position for subs and shortcuts a step and allows him to take someones back more effectively.....
