BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk: Look for Penn to keep pace with the powerful Sherk and eventually catch him with an armbar/triangle choke combo late in the fight. Wanderlei Silva vs. Keith Jardine: Wanderlai Silva shows a return to form in an entertaining brawl with the eager Jardine. Silva UD. Lyoto Matchida vs. Tito Ortiz: Tito Ortiz leaves the UFC on a high note by dominating the previously undefeated Lyoto Machida with a strong ground and pound game. Ortiz UD. Sokoudjou vs. Nakamura: Nakamura via submission.
BJ Penn 2nd round Submission Silva TKO 1 (given recent fights and stylistic matchups Jardine should be the favorite but its hard to imagine Silva going from the baddest man in MMA to losing 4 straight in less then 2 years) Machida UD his style is what Tito should never fight Sokodjue TKO 2
So far, most appear to agree Silva has the advantage over Jardine, but it appears that more people than I had expected think Tito Ortiz can take Matchida. I don't think Ortiz has it in him to stick with the "Karate Dragon", who also knows some damn good BJJ. His striking is unorthodox, very entertaining, as well. I see Ortiz losing by decision.
Alot more people are picking Nakamura than I thought, hopefully that will translate into a good betting value for soku, nak really just isn't that good.
I think Penn beats Sherk. Penn has better striking and I think Penn will give Sherk real problems on the ground. I'm not even sure that Sherk will be able to take Penn down and keep him there for any real length of time. I think Jardine beats Silva. Silva has lost his last 3 in a row and I think he's just not as great as he used to be. As far as Machida and Ortiz go, I see it as a domination, I just don't know which one of them wins.
No way Sherk beats BJ Penn. Penn dominated Hughes for most all of both fights......how is a smaller, less strong version of Hughes gonna beat BJ?
It's never a perfect comparison but you could also look at their performances against Georges St. Pierre. GSP thoroughly beat Sherk while he had a very tough time with Penn. Also, if GSP has trouble taking and keeping Penn down, Sean Sherk is going to have one hell of a time.
That's the thing with Penn, even if you manage to get him down...which I think Sherk will during this fight inflicting damage is another thing, he Nullified GSP which is no easy task and was beating Hughes from his back but I think Sherk will wear him down over the 5 rounds. Don't forget it takes alot of energy to keep Sherk from gNp for 5 rounds...this should be a great fight.
No cares about the undercard? BJ Penn Wanderlei Silva Lyoto Machida Wilson Gouviea Thiago Silva Ivan Salaverry Rameau Soukoujou Rich Clementi Yoshiyuki Yoshida Dong Hung Kim Shane Carwin
I just watched the countdown show- BJ Penn just said he wants to get on top of Sherk, pound him, and lick his blood afterwords (the way he did with Hughes?). Ew- I wonder why Penn likes to do that.
Tito better not let it go to decision - because Dana White isn't going to want a victorious Ortiz holding onto the mic in what will be his last UFC fight. One can only imagine what Tito will offer White, as a form of 'parting shot' to the PPV audience.
I really don't see how Tito can beat Machida...even if he returns to his 2002-2003 form, he's at a terrible styles disadvantage. He really needs to pull out something different than the usual.
