It's bubble will burst soon enough, the last several cards have been appalling. Hardly worth watching.
A big factor is I'd say that MMA is much more sucessful in marketing its fights than boxing is, partly because orgs brands sell fighters and partly because MMA's fanbase is generally more ignorant of the sport than boxings. The hype is that MMA always puts on its superfights but the reality is far from true, tons of big matches never happen due to issues between orgs. You look at MMA over the last couple of years and how many really massive fights between two guys who are clearly the top 2 in their division have we seen? Machida and Shogun is really the only one that comes to mind.
aoki-melendez was a pretty good fight. Both were consider the 2 best beside bj penn at the time. the thing i like about ufc is you don't have to worry about fighters not taking the fight cuz dana calls the shot. They can't really make excuses like floyd or wlad about the stupid drug testing. As far as the best fighting eacxh other. It pretty much happens all the time. GSP has been fighting the best contender @ 170 but he's so damn good that people just forget the other guy his fighting is the 2nd best. Look @ what he did to bj penn. Penn was a top 5 p4p and he destroyed him. Silva fought the best contender @ 185 and destroyed them all 205 lbs title has change multiple times cuz of the deep talent @ light heavyweights.
UFC hype job works, 80% UFC guys are just American college wrestlers. Rogan then sells them as new super stars, boxing you cant do that, people can see if you're not so good as you claimed to be.
Nothing compares to a boxing megafight but UFC is just more consistant and entertaining convenient little package. The UFC cant put enough guys in the ranks to meet the demand. Its even used by major sporting publications as a league like NBA NFL MLB. Boxing dreams of those kind of foundations.
True and it shows the value of promoters actually working together for once. Anderson had some big fights at 185 a few years ago but since Hendo he's not really faced a dominant force in the division, good matches yes but not massive fights on a par with Pac/Floyd. WW has had some big fights but in the same situation in boxing I think most would have it pegged as a weak division, nobody but the UFC has ever invested in it long term and as a result theres not much depth with GSP way ahead of everyone else. The UFC does put on good fights obviously but in terms of really massive fights they still miss out on alot of them including many of the very biggest, Chuck/Wanderlei when they were both at the top, Fedor/Lesnar last year etc. One big positive I think MMA has is that fans tend to be alot less nationalistic and willing to accept foreign talent. Boxing in the US has bar the odd mexican tended to be pretty isolationist which has limated the foreign talent active there.
Fights like Morales-JMM and Pac-Mosley would be universally praised if they were promoted by the UFC because legends never age in MMA. Martinez vs Dzin would also headline a PPV. It's a good fight in boxing but the UFC would manage to hype up at least 300k people to buy it...to their credit.
They are fair points but I think the key is that MMA generally doesn't try to sell a card off of the one fight. Because they are an org they support it with a strong card so each card should have something that someone likes whether its based on technique, character, nationality etc
Theres certainly alot of dishoniesty in MMA promoting that both fans and the media don't pick up on to nearly the same degree as in boxing. Equally though I think Boxing is often too negative for its own good, dismissive of anyone who shows any weakness and as a result we see many good matches undervalued or fail to happen. The king when it comes to setting up big matches over the last 10-15 years though must surely be K1, pretty much every fight you could wish to see there happened, often 3 or more times.
7 of the 10 highest PPV are from the ufc and if you look at the boxers it's floyd and pac. What happen to the rest of the boxers who fought on PPV?
Its still boxing doesnt matter if its floyd and pac. You cant pick an choose like that, the fact is the biggest boxers sell more than the biggest mma.
He didnt, he said where are the other boxing PPV's. I really hope the big fights get made in boxing in 2011, been a good year for the sweet science and I hope they can build on the momentum. There's room for both sports, and bickering on message boards between boxing & MMA fans is counter productive
Thats what he meant though. I agree with you on the bickering though, i actually like mma and both sports are no threat to each other imo. If you like boxing, you like boxing period. Same with mma. People arent gonna just switch sports
The UFC sells cards on their brand name, that alone gets them 300k buys. The rest of the buys come from name recognition and the average fan doesn't care or recognize anything past the co-main event.
