UFC sells out 55,000 seats in minutes for UFC 129 in Toronto

Man you got to give it to Canadians. They certainly support their athletes. And are you sure its 55K? As that would be a absolute record for the UFC who to my knowledge have never had more than 20,000. Let alone a figure that high?

EDIT: Just read the article. Oops... They'll never beat PRIDE at the Tokyo Dome who had over 91,000 in attendance for Shockwave back in 2002. That card was ridiculous too.

 

The previous UFC record was 23,000 in Montreal, so yes, it's a record both in attendance and gate receipts. As an aside, we have an MMA show once a week, and Dana knew this was going to unfold like this about 3-4 months ago, in fact he said being allowed to fight in Ontario was the biggest story for the UFC in 2010.

The orginally had a venue of about 42,000 and reconfigured it when the demand was so high. We Canadian's are big on fights, which is one reason why hockey is so popular. Hockey actually had designated fighters up until the last 20-30 years. They still have them, but now they also need to know how to play hockey at a competitive level.

If Silva and GSP end up fighting, Toronto's got a great chance of being the city where it's held.

 

The UFC could sell big at every event but they said they want to keep the good atmosphere for the fans. They are trying this one with huge screens etc but I'm not sure. The guys in the nosebleed seats will be looking at a dot.

 

Depends on what venue they use in Brazil in the future ........................ 91'000 is pretty ****in ridiculous though , this has to eat away at Dana's ego surely !!!

 

They're certainly doing their best. Rather than the standard seating on the field they're putting bleachers in to improve sitelines...even though that means they can't see all the seats in the arena. Plus they're putting up more seats, etc. Its gonna be as good as a stadium show can be...I think most people understand what they're getting into.

 

Doubt it...he's been resisting doing a stadium show for years. Originally he didn't want to do more than 42,000.

And yes congrats to Pride on 91,000 fans...genuinely impressive if that's a true figure. But how much was the gate?

 

Keep in mind that when Dempsey was fighting in the 20's they had over 100,000+ a some of his events, and I believe the record held in Mexico was over 130,000, so people will go, if they like the card.

 

There are going to be differences in a time before television. At the time, how much money was made was dependent solely on how many tickets were sold. Of course in this situation they will sell as many as possible, and people will take really terrible seats when it is their only option to view the fight.

 

Julio Cesar Chavez fought Greg Haugen in the early 1990's in Mexico City with 132,000 in attendance.

 

in Montreal, boxing is more popular than MMA. We have two major local promoters and a good amount of local talent that fights on the world stage.

not the case in the ROC, where MMA rules. But they should still realize GSP is 100% QC.

 

Im not sure what the gate was. But the figure is accurate. Iv watched that show numerous times and see that many people in a stadium was impressive. There were fans at the back with binoculars so they could see the fights. It was insane.

 

The Rogers Centre is a 5 minute walk from the Law Firm in which I work.We have 8 tickets to this event ($800 per seat) and are located ground level 16 rows from the ring.Not a huge MMA fan but when I was offered a seat by my friend I jumped at it.It will be a fun event to be part of.
