UFC well and truly taking over from boxing?

Just kiddin mate. Been there myself many times. Not a 12 hour shift though, that's grim.

The popularity of each sport comes down to one thing and one thing only; the level of stardom of individual fighters. It doesn't matter whether the fighter is a MMA or a boxer, if he's got the right blend of charisma and ability he will do the big numbers. There's a big enough audience out there for both sports to excel.

MMA may be getting the better of the numbers at the moment but that's only because McGregor is such a big star. Floyd would be still capable of doing similar numbers if he didn't wait so long to fight Pac in what ended up a huge anticlimax. McGregor will one day retire and there's no reason why the next big combat sports star can't be a boxer. There's room for both sports to have multiple stars too, it simply comes down to the appeal of the fighters personalities/styles and the promotion behind them. Casuals are what make up the big numbers and casuals are that uneducated they don't care which combat sport they're watching, only the bandwagon the fighter creates for them tp jump on.

 

They will sell out as there audience doesn't get to see a show every month so when it's in town they will go. WWE will sell out when they hit the town for the same reason.

Comparing apples and oranges. The UFC isn't a sport. UFC is a promotion which controls every aspect of the show, most important being the match making. Its unfair to compare to boxing which is nothing of the sort. The #1 ranked UFC fighter wont be fighting the #1 ranked Bellator fighter for the same reasons you wont always get the #1 Top Rank fighter fighting the #1 ranked PBC fighter.

 

Haha nah mate I've never had that concoction. The closest thing I've had to a cocktail in Scotland is 20/20 mixed with Vodka. I've had **** loads of those manky cocktails you get on holiday though. When I was younger I necked a whole bottle of Bells Whisky I won in a raffle and got took away in an Ambulance about 45 minutes later. I already drank about half a dozen pints before that. It ranks up there as the top 3 stupidest things I've ever done.

I was a boxing fan from 1996 to 2015 but I've gotten to the point now where I don't understand why anyone would choose to be a boxing fan over the UFC for a variety of reasons:

1. The best fight the best in UFC 9 times out of 10, in boxing the best avoid the best
2. Each weight division has one world champion as opposed to however many it is in boxing (I've lost count).
3. Fighters move up the rankings in the UFC by beating fighters ABOVE them unlike boxing where the opposite happens.
4. The fighters and their management have little if any control over who they fight unlike in boxing where damn near everyone is a cherrypicker

 

Yeah I would say it took over boxing a while ago. Just way better more competitive fights and obviously McGregor.

No Latvian window cleaners stinking out the undercards etc.

Like Andre boring Ward said all talk and not much action in boxing.

 

Way more competitive? Debatable. The 'fights' in UFC are awful = very poor usually.

100% yes. I read an article from a boxing page in america that madison square garden are looking to host more UFC shows than boxing since the success of UFC's first event there. Madison square garden has been a great venue for boxing for years but there suupposivily getting less interested are now looking at more UFC shows. That would be awful for boxing if it becomes more of a home for UFC.

Another edge they have is that there cards are stacked from top to bottom. For instance, imagine someone tuning in to Malik Scott/Luis Ortiz..are they gonna stick around? No. There going to flick over to UFC and watch the action packed bloodbaths that are on display.

UFC viewing figures are massively rising. I have to admit UFC is doing things better than boxing. Like one champion per division. The only way to get a higher ranking is to beat someone higher ranked than you etc..

 

American Football can never take over from soccer.. but it's a worthy sideshow.. baarx..

But in MMA you have more then one champ per division. People are getting confused here. UFC is a promotion and not the actual sport.

I was was watching MMA when pride FC was the number one organization and had all the best fighters. Back then people wanted to see the best from pride fight best from UFC. This didn't happen as they were two rival promoters with there own fighters and own champions. It's unfair to say UFC only has one champion or the best fight the best. That's easy to do when you are the only major promoter in town. Also their is the negatives with UFC being the only major MMA promotion in this world. Fighters can no longer flirt with signing with a rival promoter as the money isn't there. UFC can do all kinds of **** with there fighters and these guys have nowhere else to go.

Let me ask you a question. Would you like boxing to only have one major promoter or is having multiple promoters better for the fighters.

 

Everyone around the world are talking about Conor McGregor. UFC have the biggest name in combat sports right now and more and more people are getting into MMA. Safe to say it is bigger than boxing right now.
