Thomas Carty vs. Jonathan Exequiel Vergara, 8 rounds @ heavyweight

 

The undefeated Irish southpaw, Thomas "Bomber" Carty, is 8-0 (7), and favored -700 here. The visiting Argentine is 6-1 professionally, a +460 underdog today.

 

Carty's shoulders/traps are comically huge.

 

Vergara in full survival mode already in the 1st, back skating along the ropes and leaning far away to dodge the Carty heavy left cross.

 

Carty with a massive left uppercut wrecking ball to drop Vergara in the second. Vergara down again moments later, but that was a shove/toss. Another shove/toss. Vergara down a fourth time, and this was from a clear flush left hand shoveled into his navel. Vergara beats the count and flurries to push Carty off but eats a shot, overhand left, and goes down a fifth time in the round (third legitimate). He would have been saved by the bell as he beats the ref's count but the white towel flies in.

Alright, that was fun. There isn't much artfulness to Carty but the lug can thump.

He weighs 255lb and leverages every ounce in his shots.

Shame, because a fight between them in a couple of years could be fire.

 

Emmet Brennan vs. Kevin Cronin, 8 rounds @ super middleweight

 

This is also for a vacant Celtic title, at 168lbs.

UFC Fight Pass and Wikipedia both spell Brennan's first name the more standard "Emmett", but if you look at his own social media it matches what BoxRec lists - Emmet with just one t.

 

Kevin "Kingdom Warrior" Cronin is 8-1-1, both blemishes coming against Jamie Morrissey. Brennan stopped Morrissey in the final round of their eight round encounter, his sophomore outing.

 

Commentators say O'Brien scored an upset earlier as Donovan was, aside from undefeated in the pros, a decorated amateur. Both facts apparently true of Brennan, an Olympian, who is being given all he can handle in the first two rounds here versus Cronin. (hence the parallel being drawn)

 

Gotta say, Brennan for an Olympian is looking pretty shite. Completely buckling under fairly basic pressure.
