Jem Mace was subject to an atempt on his life in the states after he unified the British and American titles. He had to carry his challenger in one of his title defences because of the possible crowd reaction.

Frank Slavin was attacked by a mob when he was on the point of defeating Jem Smith in the U.K. He was rescued by an Earl who threatened the mob with a large bowie knife.

McTigure Stribling was a little too exciting for comfort.

Said football hooligans would have been mere pretenders in the bareknuckle era.

The threats to O' Grady were orchestrated by his Father for publicity, this has been proven.
The Minter V Hagler fight was tense before the action ,but no trouble occurred before the stoppage.

One of the stretcher bearers had his pocket picked, whilst carrying Owen to the dressing room for treatment.

Bowe-Golota comes to mind especially because of the riot that happened after.

In 1998, Englishman Geoff McCreesh fought Welshman Michael Smyth for the British title in Reading, the bout resulted in a riot, fans of both boxers were fighting with each other, the fight was stopped for 5 minutes {I cant say I can remember a fairly big fight stopped in the middle of a contest before because of crowd trouble}, the ring announcer addressed the crowd but they carried on fighting, when the fighting in the crowd subsided, McCreesh knocked down Smyth for a full count, the crowd rioted again the police arrived in numbers to try and stop the riot, McCreesh went on to win the fight and thought that the travelling Welsh support had deliberately started rioting to give their man more time to recover, McCreesh was never awarded the Lonsdale belt in the ring that he had won which is customary, there was not only a 5 minute hold up during the bout there was a 50 minute hold up between bouts before the police got control and the promotion restarted.

It was revenge for McCreesh as when the two boxers had previously fought in Wales, the Welshman won because McCreesh was disqualified.
{That was the first of two DQ's on the trot for McCreesh, one for holding and one for butting, in McCreesh's amateur days he jumped out of the ring to join his family fighting his opponents family, he was disqualified in the dressing room after the fight for leaving the ring without the permission of the ref}.

Apart from McCreesh I cant think of another boxer being DQ'ed twice on the trot and Smyth is only one of two boxers I know to hold a win over Joe Calzaghe.

In 1910 two ATG's met in Cardiff Jim Driscoll from the docks area of the City and Pontypridd fighter Freddie Welsh, supporters from the valleys came down to Cardiff to support Welsh, which turned into a nasty affair with Welsh elbowing, holding, doing kidney punches and rabbit punches and Driscoll responding with headbutts, Driscoll eventually getting disqualified for butting, there was riots all over Cardiff after the fight, one set of supporters celebrating and one set of supporters very upset.

That's aweful, possibly that's why boxing was stopped at the Olympic Auditorium. things got really bad there...It was once a great boxing venue.

Kaylor v Christie for the British title back in the 80s.I remember the whole build up to the fight was bad due to racial tension.

Thanks for the inside knowledge. I'd only read reports of it, and all say the same thing. Fires inside, cars being rolled and torched outside, just mayhem generally.

    :good

Chavez-Gonzalez was pretty ugly. Plastic glasses were being tossed into the ring on a regular basis.

McTigue-Stribling wasnt ugly until it became apparent the McTigue and company were in the process of trying to (and ultimately successfully) pull off the great train robbery.

Recently the Khan army thugs and football supporters have been kicking the crap out of 1 another, I don't have a problem with that so much but I have a problem with family types being caught in the middle being intimidated or worse at an event they paid good money to get into.
