This is my preliminary thoughts, it always helps to see a list and some of the names involved and people can expand on what they disagree on...

    2. Mike McTigue
    3. John Conteh
    4. Freddie Mills
    5. Len Harvey
    6. Jock McAvoy
    7. Joe Calzaghe
    8. Clinton Woods
    9. Dennis Andries
    10. Chris Finnegan

Fitz won't be that high on my list, his career at 175 was too short. I don't think the division was even officially recognized untl Fitz was in his late 30's.

The problem is he has a lot of fights where he'd be above middleweight, I don't know where to rank those victories. I suppose I awarded him quite a few for heavyweight so I can't do the same here, its probably best to keep them as heavyweight and middleweight.

    10. Chris Finnegan

Okay, I'm happier with this list. I think thats the cut off point for me where I realise Fitz didn't do his best work at light heavy, but purely on ability and all things considered I can't rank him any lower. Just doesn't seem right.

I'm not sure who was better between Chris Finnegan or Dennis Andries, I'm going to have to try and dig out some footage because there isn't much to seperate them any other way.

I havn't made a proper decision yet but when these rankings came up my first reaction was that I'd have Fitz very high at HW, the lower end (say 7th/ 8th) of the top 10 at 175 and around 5th at middleweight.

IMHO most of Fitzs fights over 160 (although the limit was flexible on ocassion) prior to 1902/3 have to ranked as either over the weight middleweight fights or full heavyweight fights because 175 didn't really exist as a division before that.

The Jeff Harding fight is on YouTube in high quality. Sadly he's officially 35 years old but by his own admission may be closer to 40. Not the best way to judge him...

I've seen the Bob Foster/Finnegan fight and he was a lot more polished than this guy, performed quite creditably I thought.

Finnegan actually looks better than Clinton I think, but Clinton's achievements outweigh his.
