56,000 is impressive, they think Calzaghe will better that figure that next time he fights in Cardiff.
So how many Mexicans, Ricans, Philipino's, Australians etc... fight in the UK? A few perhaps, but still 1/10th of those that fight in the US, and 1/10th of the skill level too. Regardless of numbers, the best fighters from ALL over the world, usually decide to fight in the US. So I still call that the mecca of boxing, and I would kill myself if I was a yank ( I joke, but that's not why I say the above) Why do you feel Ricky went over to the US?
The UK may draw bigger crowds but fighter have still to go to the States to make their name. Kinda like football(soccer), South America produces countless world class players and South American teams draw massive crowds but if a football player wants to make it big he needs to go and play in Europe, no matter where he's from.
there was an article recently that said the biggest fight this year in america only had an audience of a few million. amir khan on itv dwarfs the biggest tv exposure american boxers get.
Does audiences really mean your the mecca of boxing? As I said - Mexicans, PRs, Philipinos, Australians and MOST other countres (some of which have produced some of the best fighters of all time, and still do today) usually come to the US to fight - and not only fight, but train. Most of the best fighters are in the US, plain and simple. And that's NOT because they are neccessarily Americans. If a guy as ordinary as Khan gets such a big audience, that means little, except some people are easilly fooled. And I'm as far from an American as can be.
NO, because the majority of those names were in boxing's glory days, when they did put bums in the seats and boxing was one of the biggest sports. Nowadays, it is still good and on a bit of an uprise ffrom recent years, but still not what it used to be, because American fans have mostly only been interested in HW's, and if not that, other sports like Football and Basketball.
Boxing's popularity in the USA seems to be rapidly declining. The hardcore fans will always follow the sport but they're in a minority and I bet for the casual sports fan in America the biggest fight of the year will be PBF-DLH II. That's a real shame as there's so many great fights that have happened this year (eg. Marquez-Vazquez III) and some more that are scheduled for later in the year (eg. Cotto-Margo) yet no one cares.
I still don't see how popularity equates to being the mecca of boxing. The place where MOST of the best fighters not only fight, but also train, has to take the cake. And that's the US. The UK? atsch One definate p4per in Joe, one arguable in Haye, and the only other name that's really decent is Hatton, who ain't no longer a p4per. I think the fact that Khan gets so many views proves my point. The Brits like watching fellow brits, maybe?
Brits only watch Brit fighters. Floyd would be unkown to the majority of the people in the UK if not for the Hatton fight. The UK is not the mecca of boxing as you say, most people know **** all about boxing. If you ask the regular Brit for his p4p top 5 you'd probably get, 1)Floyd 2)Calzaghe 3)Hatton 4)Khan and 5)Hopkins (JC's last fight). Even the media is ignorant and rarely report on boxing. Then when Hatton or Khan is going to fight suddenly everyone watches boxing.
i never said anything about mecca and never have. its a myth. a lot of the worlds best boxers have no following in countries outside there own, but they are still elite. the truth is there are only 4 big money markets for boxing in the whole world. usa/uk/germany/japan. japan has only little men, not wanted in america. germany has funny sounding names and there best boxers of the last decade where defensive orientated and america had little intrest. that leaves america and uk. its hardly a massive playing field. by rights mexico someday should be able to have there main fights in house .
Your avatar is just plain wrong! And that poor little girl probably doesn't truly understand what she's doing by holding those signs up. So not only is it wrong for what it says, but its wrong for having a little girl holding them. Or am I mis-reading it or something?
