UK Super Middleweight Scene - 2 Years Time

    I know not everyone is the proud owner of a crystal ball - but what are your predictions for the UK SMW scene in 2 years time?

    In recent years this has been the division thats gave us the biggest and best fights as well as some of our best fighters (Eubank, Benn, Collins, Reid, Calzaghe, Froch).. with the current crop about and especially with that certain big fight come May 31st it's only going to get better.

    Carl Froch
    Currently the main man and Matchroom poster boy, cannot for the life of me see that he'll still be about in 2 years time - in fact it's possible we could see the last of him next month depending on what happens??

    George Groves
    The one currently being groomed for stardom. Young, exciting fighter with speed and power - if he gets the win next month he'll be world champion with one hell of a platform to build from. However, another defeat = 2 losses on the bounce and back to the drawing board. Definitely a future world champion what ever the case.

    James Degale
    The man who was initially groomed for stardom after his exploits in the Olympics however the hype has since died down. A close defeat to his bitter rival and the arrogance has been reigned in a bit. That said, people are giving him a lot of stick - he's currently chipping away at lining himself up in a mandatory position so could well be fighting for a world title this year himself. A rematch v Groves somewhere down the line has always been on the cards.

    Callum Smith
    Bags of potential and currently blowing everyone away. Imagine he'll earn himself the British strap this year & will continue to progress. Need to remember though he's not long turned over, will he be knocked in the door for world titles in 2 years? Some seem to think so. Don't think he needs to be rushed though.

    Rocky Fielding
    I like Rocky, improving with each fight (although his fight with Adamu didn't set the arena alight - but we know the issue with his hands) and he seems fairly heavy handed. Don't really see him doing anything on the European or world scenes, domestically he'll definitely be in the mix. Can see that sooner or later he'll run into Callum Smith and he'll be handed a defeat.

    Paul Smith
    Think he's 30/31 now so he'll be 32/33. Again, domestically a good fighter and can see him being in more good fights (his fight with Dodson last year was a belter) but don't think he'll be any further up the chain than he is now.

    Frank Buglioni
    Watched him at the last copper box show and could see the improvements made. Sparring with Groves and now has his foot in the door on the European circuit - still don't see him cracking world level.


    Then taking into consideration whether any of the MW's will jump up.

    - Was rumours BJS had Degale down in sparring, believe what you will. If he was to go up to SMW which has been discussed before I can't see him doing much there - seems happy at MW, some could argue he should be a LMW.

    - Martin Murray, if he can't bag himself that MW title.. will he decide to make the jump up? He put himself out there for a Froch fight at SMW a while back.

    - Eubank Jnr, can't see him moving up in the next 2 years but again another sparring story involving Degale and talk of a fight between the two. Wouldn't hit hard enough at the weight.

    Its certainly a interesting division, I think Degale will win a title and that rematch with Groves will be a big fight

    Good write up Furey,
    Whatever happens next month Froch will be retired within the next 12-18 months.

    Groves will at some time become a champion if not next month,but for me Callum Smith certainly the fighter to follow,great future.

    Froch will be retired, but I think he has more than one fight left him even if he loses (barring a very heavy KO loss maybe). He will most likely have his vegas fight, maybe against the winner (or even loser) of the GGG vs chavez jr fight.

    Groves will be near the top of the tree, especially if ward moves up. The degale rematch will almost certainly happen, and I can't wait for that - expect another close fight.

    Callum smith is the most exciting british smw by far, but he has proven nothing yet. In the next 2 years he would be hoping to be ranked, british and maybe euro champion.

    It is an exciting division domestically, and one we should be proud of.

    can't see him ever moving up.. all he does is talk about moving up until he does it's unrealistic as he's comfortable at the weight.

    Yeah man Groves, Callum Smith and Degale are 3 excellent prospects, in that order for me. I predict two of them will become world champions, and one of them will become a star following the footsteps of Calzaghe, Froch, Eubank, etc. The UK has always produced top super middleweights. Anthony Fowler will also do very well once he turns pro, look out for him he looks special.

    Groves and Smith will be at the top.

    Buglioni will step up, lose, then start fighting nobodies because he sells tickets for FW.

    DeGale will be begging Mick to bring a world champion to Crawley shopping centre.

    Paul Smith will retire when he realises his ego weighs too much and he can no longer make SMW as a result.

    Fielding will move up a division and into obscurity before going back to school to start Key Stage 3 again.

    Good thread Saint, like it ,and welcome to Lava.

    Many names fairly assessed IMO, surely they'll comprise of Britain's best SMW challengers/champs over the next 2 years.

    Froch may be on the way out (after a vegas-showdown) but few on this list have a chance to match what he's achieved I think.

    In 2 years time I predict DeGale to pick up a belt or 2, maybe Groves.....I only doubt his mentality, not his boxing assets. Callum Smith may also have a world honour if he can stay busy and injury free (a worry with exceptionally heavy hitters).

    A curve ball in my prediction will be Eubank Jr making media waves and challenging for a belt at SMW in a domestic dust-up, should a Brit win one. He's certainly confident....and has charisma and media clout with the Eubank name.

    Eventually I think he will move up. Maybe not in the next two years, but at some point in his career.

    I think callum smith has the potential to surpass Groves eventually, but anyone of those 3 could realistically win and keep hold of a world title.

    Not seen much of Fowler at all, but anyone I speak to speaks very hightly of him. All good for British boxing :D

    Watched a bit of Fowler in the amateurs and when he went into WSB, kept an eye on him after hearing he was Robbie Fowlers cousin :lol: definitely looks a talent... think he'll make the transition into the pro's very easily.

    I don't rate his power as lowly as some, I believe it will develop and that also, he was holding back somewhat due to injury during his flurry of fights on Channel 5 (just a hunch though).

    Bear in mind that a perceived lack of power hasn't hindered DeGale's rise through the ranks recently. Jnr's technical and athletic potential could see him perform similar feats IMO.

    after Froch retires after a fantastic career

    Groves and Callum Smith will be world champions .. they are the real deal and will be in big fights for a long time

    Degale is talented and will be a world title challenger, but his feather fists and the strongness of the division mean that he will fall short.

    Buglioni is quite good but will only get to european level max

    Eubank Jnr , Fielding, P Smith - don't rate these 3 at all... all domestic level
    Eubank Jnr is too pillow fisted and just not good enough, Fielding is one dimensional and lacks ring IQ, P Smith aint even worth talking about.
