I was having a discussion on another thread with Tony Dodson, and mentioned about how it would be great to have a UK version of the super six, to determine our best SMW. He thought it wasn't a bad shout. I would have Smith, Quigley, Dodson, Magee, David and possibly Anderson competing. Would like some opinion on this as to who you would have compete, or if this is even relevant.
I'd love to see it but the only problem is that guys would be trapped for two years in the competition when they would want to maybe move onto European and world level where as the super six is the pinnacle. It would also not allow prospects to enter the fray once they've reached title level. My list would have atm we can't enter the Degale's and Groves so it would be Magee Salam/Thirlwall Dodson Quigley Smith Anderson
We've already had Dodson vs Quigley and Quigley vs Smith. A super six isn't needed cos they are all already fighting each other. We just need Magee to enter the mix. Dodson should fight Quigley. Magee v Smith. Winner vs Winner.
I kind of agree with that. I just feel the guys that are on the fringe should maybe be getting a look in.
I am looking forward to the class of 2009 - Degale, Jeffries & Groves being let of the leash. By September 2010 the UK SMW map may be very different
Maybe they could have all the proposed match ups on the same night so that we aren't waiting for the following month for the next match up, which would hopefully allow for the comp to complete quicker. I think any prospects in and around the scene would just have to wait. I think something like this is almost needed in british smw division, as opinion is so widely divided as to who is the top man. there are a number of people who think anderson is good enough for a shot, and many that feel magee should still be in the mix, although i understand he may be mandatory for a euro shot now. David is fighting anderson for a british title elimniator, so needs to be in the mix, and dodson and quigley clearly need to be included It may not be workable, but could possibly piggy back on the back of the super six, and generate some much needed publicity for our beloved sport in this country, lord knows it needs it!
I always liked the idea of a tournament involving the guys at domestic level, which could take place mid week lets say Wednesday. You could have 8 Fighters in a knock out competition with it being 8x3 throughout because of that you could have the tournament done and duster within 4/5 months and the British title fight 8 months after the first fight. Here is my example of a tournament at Super Middleweight Tony Dodson-Tyrone Wright Matthew Thirwall-Eddie McIntosh Carl Dilks-Stevie McGuire Kenny Anderson-Paul David
In an ideal world, that would be great, but feel warren would defo keep smith and degale apart for a while yet, but jeffries v quigley, a definate possibility, and groves v dodson maybe, as Dodson has said he will take on anyone to back back in the british title fray
It's a good idea mate as long as it's worked out properly it can always be done. As you say though certain promoters won't let there guys no where near it. It can be done and should be because it would generate alot of publicity in a very good division. If were looking at gaining interest what about maybe having a 8 man tournament. One night they fight for right to enter semi finals then they have semi finals and then final. the final would have a pre set date whereas the semi would be flexible in case of injuries. I'd have it seeded so that we really have the cream of the crop in later stages. It could be done and dusted in a year. Just a thought. They could do a different style show to freshen it up...have interaction between viewers and the panel (e-mails and texts). I think problem why a lot of domestic fighters don't get a lot of fan fare is because they fight then go into the wilderness for long spells and they lose the casual fans and maybe the fans that are knowledgeable but not to keen like us. They have a great fight impress people then go missing and people forget the names but just remember the shorts and the face.
Yes, I know it lacks the star quality of the other competitions that have been mentioned but it would be realistic provide more boxing on TV and the winner would be considered a solid contender for someone like Paul Smith to face. Simply put it's a good way of giving the B level and C level domestic fighters tough fights and give them TV exposure.
I think a seeding system would be ideal. And it could be done over the course of about 9-12 months then. Also give them ample time to prepare for each opponent, as if they are prerapring for a chmpionship bout, give them a real sense of working towards a tangible target. I love it!
