Ray Seales came away with a Split-Decision (3:2) victory, in a highly debated decision. Sugar Ray, went on to win the Gold Medal in the (63.5 Kg) 139 lb. Light-Welterweight Division. 1974 Fought the 'Great Ugandan' 'southpaw' Ayub Kalule in the Semi-Finals of the 1974 World Amateurs. Battled back-and-forth with the 'skilled' boxer, only to lose a close Decision (5:0), that many said was 'too close to call'. Ayub Kalule went on to win the Gold Medal in the Light-Welterweight Division. 1976 Fought American Star, Ray Leonard in the Quarter-Finals of the 1976 Olymoic Games. After an opening round flurry by Ray Leonard, Ulrich Beyer battled back to fight Ray evenly in Round 1. In Round 2, the stronger punching Beyer pressed the action, and scored enough to edge Ray in a close round. In Round 3, it was the flashier Ray who edged the aggressor Beyer in a close round, to win a Decision (5:0), in a bout that the Europeans said the Scoring-Judges looked at flash instead of effective punching. Ray Leonard went on to win the Gold Medal in the Light-Welterweight Division.
