Yeah, fighting for the Euro title could be a tricky proposition.

For one, at least back in the day, people in the UK would tell you if you knocked an Italian out in Italy you’d get a draw … and Italians would tell you the same thing about going to the UK. And I’m sure it was true with France, Germany and everywhere else. Unless you saw your guy as a cinch, well superior to the EBU champ, you might hold off because you might only get one shot at that. (And it would be a purse bids thing or else the A promoter would make an offer that would be taken because the B promoter couldn’t compete with that anyway.)

The other thing operative here is that if you did fight for and win an EBU title, you’d better be sure your guy is ready to go for the world title at that point. Because that might be when the offer comes (and it might be the only offer you ever get), you turn it down and you risk your guy eventually losing to someone for far less money and far lower stakes without ever getting a world shot — you’re going to have to defend that EBU title possibly on the road where you could get robbed even if you did enough to win.

So say your guy is good but you think he needs more seasoning, a few guys to take him deeper in fights and expose him to some different styles … maybe best to not press the issue for an EBU shot because you control who the opponent is and are sure it’s in ‘friendly’ territory while you’re still building your fighter.
