Do people actually care if a fighter isn't undefeated today? I've seen many people criticize Lomachenko for his loss to Salido and many for Canelo's to Mayweather. In Fact I've seen people on Instagram putting them out of top 5 PfP consideration due to it.
You only have to see where Salido`s career went after he beat Loma compared to how Loma grew as a fighter, these fans don`t realise fighters can improve, they think you are born with talent and that if you win a 3 rounder in the Olympics you are the finished article, nobody could have beat Floyd when Canelo fought him, but it`s clear to see Canelo is twice the fighter he was back then.
NO. Undefeated seems to mean too much these days. Boxers and their managers or promoters will throw away career defining opportunities to protect their 0. Near enough every great name and champion throughout this sports history lost at some point.
Of course promoters are going to use it to sell a fight but fans should see through that and not make a big deal of it. The fetishisation of the unbeaten 0 is actually hurting boxing these days. It's making fighters and promoters more risk averse. I almost wish every fighter had at least one defeat on their record just so they'd take fights that carried some risk. Those people are idiots.
I call it the 'mayweather curse'. Floyd's a great fighter, but hyped up his record to extreme proportions in order to generate large scale revenue. Promoters and fighters see this, and of course try to emulate it. I mean it works, right? However, this mentality really leads to stunting of fighters skills, and less competition. Not to say being unbeaten isn't a market attraction, but it didn't used to be necessary. Even not that long back fighters like DLH, moseley, Tyson, Holyfield etc were popular with losses. Hell, Holyfield was MORE popular after losing to Bowe.
Absolutely. I tihnk if we traced back this whole ZERO thing it goes back to Floyd. And that aint no dig at Floyd that was his thing and it worked for him. But people now trying to follow the Floyd blueprint to greatness by keeping their 0 and its not the same thing and they havnt had the career of Floyd.
