Jones breaks the rules but nowhere near to the extent Fitz is in that picture. He doesn't lean back in straight lines, uses angles (Fitz doesn't), is never in a position that off balance (the balance in that position is terrible), doesn't cut off escape routes. Jones does break some rules but got away with it in his prime due to his athleticism, past prime he didn't, guess what Fitz wouldn't get away with it because he isn't nearly as fast. Ali was punished against Frazier for leaning back in straight lines, but he at least wasn't stationary like Fitz would be. Hamed was punished against MAB for having low hands and being immobile, still he is technically better than Fitz. Froch outboxed 3 times due to his low hands

Honestly if you can't see how badly that picture is you don't know much about boxing technique, Carl Froch is a technically better boxer than Fitz. Obviously using that technique you need to be the quicker and more athletic man or you're getting outboxed

Ali wasnt stationery when he leant back? Against Foreman and most after this, he want just stationery, but he was leaning against the ropes!

I don't see Bob doing much. Roy Jones is on top of the mountain that Bob helped build and has so much knowledge and technique that Bob simply didn't have access to.

Roy would knock him out early.

I try to stay out of these matchups. They're not worthy of head to head arguments. The eras were so vastly different that it makes the whole thing useless. For what it's worth I'd take Roy by early KO.

  5. bob had dynamite, i say that jones would not have the chin to take the power of bob, and i say that jones could not avoid bob during all the fight

I'm surprised Fitzsimmons hasn't gotten more votes. I remember the old guard voting him over Ray Robinson some time ago.

We only have a single grainy film on Fitzsimmons and he is made to look decidedly average by Corbett until landing the punch. He must have been good based on his reputation but it's obviously difficult to evaluate boxers that are separated by a century.

Polls are a waste of time. Most people click on the fighter they ahve heard the most about. Note taht where it is actually discussed, ie posts, it is pretty evenly matched.

This fight, at heavyweight rests on one thing. and can be summarised and predicted pretty easily if there really was a time machine, imo, by simply watching the undercard. If any fighter from Fitz era beats any fighter from Roys era, then grab your house and put it on Fitz. Actually at the right odds (probably 500 to 1) put a100 on Fitz to win this whole tournament. Fitz is the perfect figther to beat Roy Jones. If he cant beat Roy then quite simply PP and co are right about style advancements adn no fighter from Fitz period will or should ever win a fantasy matchup.

If he is in the tournament you must assume he has a chance and era only doesnt count against him. therefore Fitz has all the tools to KO jones Jr and would do so, probably early adn probably after a spirited fight.

I bet that the people who voted for Fitzsimmons, are consistently higher in terms of historical knowledge and detailed analysis/argument.

The posters who vociferously argue that modern fighters are better, mostly only sing with one or two notes(arguments) in their entire colective orchestra!

It's not that Fitzsimmons was necessarily awful or anything, it's about facing a speed "demon" who was barely hit in his prime. Many were made to look average against Jones. Fitzsimmons had the power, and he could set an opponent up, but he could very well be set up himself by a boxer who was very adept at abusing his athletic advantages over opponents.

I do not see Fitzsimmons having a huge stylistical edge, it would be a stretch to say he dominated Corbett as he was being outpunched by the faster man until scoring the KO at the end. Corbett was pouring it on with combinations at one point and put Fitzsimmons on the canvas. Jones could do the same.

The stylistic advantage definitely cuts both ways, but you have to look at who they respectivley proved their stylistic advantage against.

In Jones case, it is perhaps based on a bit of flim flam.

you'd bet all you got on a guy who is getting knocked down all fight and was stopped in 7 of his 8 losses in his career? this is a 193 lb jones vs a 167 lb fitz if you looked at the original post. not to dog what fitz was and what he accomplished but most on these boards show their full of ****-ness by picking fitz here.
