You mean he didn't want to roll around brawling in a cellar stinking of **** when he was enjoying fine brandy, cuban cigars and white wominz

Johnson completely dominated Langford with ease when they fought and as champion could pick and choose opponents. He also completely dominated MCvey and Jeanette more so than Langford ever managed. Johnson's best weight was 210lbs against Jeffries (he said so). Langford was overweight at 185, so Johnson at his best was always going to be bigger and stronger. He'd always dominate from the outside and outmuscle Langford on the inside

As champion he could pick and choose offers for fights and make big paydays regardless of who he fought. He was pretty much the Mayweather of his day, he was the best but he didn't always fight the best, didn't like fighting too much but was great at it

Exactly! What a ***** But rather than fending Sam off, he pulled a gun and told him pretty much to **** off

Johnson was a great great boxer, and he gets underrated by many on here. But i always felt Sam beats him (I gave my reasons in the thread before). Of course it woudnt be a clear cut victory as Johnson was that good. But i'd take Langford over him.

You have repeated this story of Langford challenging Johnson to a fight in a cellar a couple of times now, have you a primary source for it? Or, are you confusing it with the mythical tale of Jeffries offering to fight Johnson in a saloon cellar?
The only time a gun was ever involved between Langford and Johnson,[so far as I am aware ,]was when Johnson drove past Langford and splashed mud all over him,Langford then pulled a pistol ,but Johnson was gone.
This was recounted in "In This Corner", by Gun Boat Smith to the author.

It was in Unforgivable Blackness. I'm at work now, but i'll post the page number when I get home. (While this isnt a primary source, this is probably the most well researched book I have ever written)

That saves me a bit of work later

There was also a great story of Langford fighting Johnson in a 3 round exhibition just 4 days after they fought. Apparently Jack was going to take it easy as Sam was busted up. They clinched within 30 seconds of the fight (which was held on a stage rather than in a ring) and Sam said 'This aint no exhibition. This is a fight'. The two went on to almost tear the building down whilst kicking seven shades of **** out of each other

Jack wins this fight imo...I don't think it can be stated enough that Johnson was a brilliant tactical fighter who could figure out the best game plan for winning a fight. Shoot... he picked the perfect plan for Max to beat the very same fighter he is facing here. Imo Johnson was the best defensive figther.. better chin.. better stamina... better inside and in the clinch... and the stronger fighter... Jack by late round stoppage or UD.
