This fight hardly ever gets discussed but it was a technical masterpiece that was pretty damn close. I put this fight right up there with McCallum vs Toney. This content is protected
Their 1st fight was a great 1 too, & even more debatable to score IMO. Unfortunately, it isn't currently on YT.
I would kill to see that fight. I don't think I have ever seen it but I'm sure it is every but as good as the 2nd one. Emile had Gil Clancy in his corner and Archer had the great Freddie Brown. The boxing Iq of the fighters and trainers is off the charts.
Just an FYI, My hope is this thread gets more attention than the Jake Paul vs Tony Galento matchup but I'm not holding my breath. Lol
I should watch this, as Griffith is one of my least favorite fighters to watch. Be nice to see him in a good fight.
Curious why you don't like Griffith? He was a pretty solid fighter. If you like a technical fight, this is pretty high level.
Oh, was was a proven great. No argument. I just don't like watching him. Too insular for the most part, often doing just enough to get by. Good tools, excellent fighter, I just don't like his style.
That's fair enough. Same could definitely be said for Joey Archer. He had zero power but that is what makes him interesting too me. Archer had only 8 ko's in 45 wins, yet he was able to beat some really good fighters like Dick Tiger, Ruben Carter , Holly Mims and of course Sugar Ray Robinson. There something to be said for a guy that can find a way too win with skill over power especially in that era of 15 round fights. That middleweight division in the 60's was loaded with killers.
Very underrated technical fight indeed. Lovely display of skills from both fighters. Griffith gets a little too much criticism when it comes to his fights and although he's not always the most exciting fighter there's been plenty of fights where it's great to watch such as this one.
