Way to many to mention. Whenever a big name fighter fights a relatively unknown fighter. The unknown fighter tends to get a lot less than the big name fighter. It's not always the case but it happened many, many times.

Hopkins versus Trinidad

Hopkins making the 14th defence of his crown : $2.5 Million
Trinidad in his 2nd ever fight at middleweight : $9 Million

Check out the purses in their fights when they fought. You'll see a huge difference in their's and their opponents a lot of the time.

It's just the way it is.

The lesser know fighter is willing to do this because:

1) It is normally the biggest purse he has ever received anyway, and

2) If he can somehow cause the upset he can cash in on his new found fame in subsequent fights.

Yep that was ONE under paid fighter.

 

Tell that to Tommy Gibbions, He got paid more money by being beat by Gene Tunney, than he ever did vs Jack Dempsey for the title.

 

I couldn't give specific names, but traditonally fighters in lower weight classes have always recieved much lower purses than fighters of the heavier classes. Years ago, I was watching USA Tuesday night fights, hosted by Sean O'Grady and Al Albert. O'grady brought up this very topic, and pointed out that lightweights, middleweights, etc were traditionally receiving average purses while the heavyweights continued to get bigger and bigger purses as time passed, yet the paydays rarely rose for the other guys. He termed this as trickle down economics. I found it rather interesting.

 

Well not today I think.

I dont see how Wlad will EVER get a DLH type of purse base off of his last fight.

 

Yeah I forgot about that one. Was that when the town went bankrupt and he was supposed to get a percentage of the profits?
