Name underrated accomplishments of boxers...if you say obvious **** like, Benitez won a world championship at 17 or Leonard winning the middleweight championship after 3 years break, we know it already- dont bore us. Mike Tyson was the only person to kayo Holmes, who fought into his 50s.
Floyd Mayweather Jr being the biggest draw currently in boxing. We even have a ****ing ongoing 13 page thread about it. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=216879&page=13
Fernando Vargas fighting Winky Wright Ike Quartey Ross 'the boss' Thompson Felix Trinidad within a span of ONE YEAR from 1st fight to last just about, going 3-1 against them, all within his first 22 fights as a pro, all the while being 21/22 years old.
I'm not a massive Valero fan, but - Edwin Valero stopping all of his first 27 opponents inside the distance. A lot of people cry foul at his level of opposition, but even Mike Tyson only had 17 legitimate stoppages to start his career (his win over Jesse Ferguson was changed from a DQ to a TKO simply for the media impact of keeping his KO streak alive) and hadn't nearly the competition level of Valero as of right now. In Valero's last 8 fights his opponents have a combined record of 233-30 (13 of those from Velasquez, his warm-up for DeMarco) and 4 of those opponents had never been stopped before facing Valero, and one (Pitalua) hadn't been stopped in 15 years. I feel that because Valero had not cleaned out the super-featherweight division and has only recently stepped up to lightweight, where the name-pool is far, far richer, way too many people detract from this accomplishment. 27 KOs with 27 wins is amazing. Just look at how Johnson stepped into the ring against Vitali Klitschko and simply spoiled and ran for 12 rounds. That's all it takes to stop a streak like that, and nobody in 27 fights has been able to see the final bell against Valero. While a lot of the casual boxing fans may be dazzled by Valero's numbers, more knowledgeable fans, I think, subscribe to the 'who has he fought' argument a little too fiercely, while forgetting that even a 'nobody' can derail an effort like Valero's. Just ask Tyrone Brunson, who went the distance with 12-9 Soriano. This puts him in the league of longest ever KO streaks, up there with Henry Armstrong, Wilfredo Gomez, Acelino Freitas, John Mugabi, and Ruben Olivares. And his competition in latter days (with the exception of the warm-up against Velasquez) has not been pitiful by any stretch of the imagination.
wladimir klitschko coming back after the sanders and brewster loss, normally he would have been mentally ****ed
Pacquiao winning a linear title as a teenager. It gets overlooked by his 7 divisions 7 titles accomplishment and the *****s like to say Mayweather has been in the game longer, but the truth of the matter is when Floyd was busy trying to win an amateur bronze medal in the Olympics Pacquiao was already professional world champion.
Herbie Hide stopping Tony Tucker in 2 rounds, who was only been stopped once before on a closed eye in well over 50 fights. With fights against Tyson, Douglas, Lewis, Seldon, Akinwande etc.
Look at the guy Manny beat for his "title" at flyweight http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=7865&cat=boxer :rofl
It really depends on who you ask... some of the younger fans fail to realize the accomplishments of Duran, Hagler, Hearns, etc... If you ask people with a depth of knowledge that was not built on boxrec and youtube it becomes a different story. Part of being able to rank an achievement is being able to put fights and fighters in their proper context. It would require reading, talking to old timers, and being able to understand the evolution of the sport in addition to what they have already done. Many greats get trashed on these forums by people who really don't know anything beyond the last five years. You guys know who you are.
Oops wrong bum This was the bum I was looking for http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=4088&cat=boxer YOu can see his loss to Pacquiao didnt derail his aspirations, 4 of his next 8 opponents actually had more wins then losses.
