He is considered one of the best 140lb fighters of all time. But he never beat an Elite or HoF fighter and he never moved up to fight a bigger name. I don't think that's underrated. I think thats a matter of perspective on how high you think KT should be rated. I think he is rated exactly where he should be. One of the top 140lb fighters ever, HoF, Top 150 ATG.
On what terms? Most consider him an elite level WW and a big puncher. Realistically, he's a solid B level 2nd crop fighter with fast hands, solid skills and defence, but mediocre power and horrible footwork.... That's where he's at.
Yes, lower top 10. I have nothing against him either as he makes exciting fights, but some people get the impression that he's a destroyer just for beating on ugly Margarito for 4 rounds before suffering an injury. He's a solid, 2nd tier fighter, which means lower top 10 in the current division. About #8 to be exact. I personally consider the top 5 to be the "top tier".
Kg, I am glad that you ask this question. I would say that boxers are overrated/underrated by the comments we make. Sometimes we say that X boxer is overrated because we think that some styles/boxers would defeat him, however, that not necessary means that he is overrated, unless, his fans think he his one of a kind and therefore nobody would/could defeat him. Let me give you some examples. Hummm:think Mayorga.... If I say that Mayorga has a good/great jab, then I am overrating him big time. If I say that Pac, or PBF don't have stamina, then I would be underrating them. It all depends on the comment of the posters. When people don't talk too much or don't talk at all about a particular boxer who happens to be doing well, then I think in some cases is because that paricular boxer for some reasons doesn't have the appeal, or his style, or whatever else you can think of, doesn't click with boxing fans or the media. At the same time it is a slap on the face for that particular boxer and his fans, and therefore we can say that he is underrated, or he is not under the radar. The media plays an important roll and they will feed us with what makes more money for them. At the end of the day if we are boxing fans, we should talk as much as we can about boxers, and try to tell somebody else about any new pretender or contender who could make the cut and probably more than that. At the present time, we tend to talk more about boxers that the media talk about it. I hope you understand my point, sometimes I am not sure if people can understand what I write. Peace.
You gave an opinion. I am dissenting. Get the **** over it. It's not lecturing, he just doesn't fit the criteria I think means underrated, I guess you were lecturing when you gave your dissenting opinion to mine? This thread is about guys who are not often mentioned, have little fan following or hatred. KT is discussed on this board all the time, was rated P4P for a while and has an entire continent that cheers for him. I know what the thread is about, I created it. KT isn't very often underrated. And if you haven't noticed the fantasy threads matching him up with other ATG on this board, then you don't pay enough attention.
I get what you're saying. Its all a matter of the perspective you look at a boxer from. But that's why I am saying a fighter who has been dominant and yet isn't discussed often or rated P4P by most. You notice when we mention best fighters of the 90's that Lopez is mentioned by less than half the posters? Or how no one ever mentiones Camacho as one of the greatest 130lb fighters ever?
PBF is very overrated, Hopkins is overrated, Taylor likewise(well not now, maybe underrated after Spinks). Margo is underrated. Still feel that alot of people have been swift to disregard RJJ as well.
By who? Most feel he's a true to form top class WW, that's overrating him if I've ever seen overrating someone. Glorified gate keeper is about on target.
I heard you. Lopez and Camacho were great fighters. If Camacho was in his prime right now, probably nobody could defeat him at 130. But don't tell this to Pac fans. :yep
