Fantastic post!!!! I think you are the ONLY person I have seen on here other than myself who mentioned Douglas...everytime this thread creeps up, I bring him up and noone else bites. His jab was picture perfect and one of the most powerful I have ever seen. :good
They didn't call him "The Ringmaster" for nothing, but he ended up pretty average compared to what eneded up expected of him.
He actually knocked Mike Williams down with a jab once. That was the fight that made me think that a match with Tyson might not have been quite the mismatch that everyone seemed to think it was at the time. (Didn't think that Douglas would win, but that he'd give Tyson problems in the early rounds)
Gene Fullmer had an awkward but very effective jab. He used it very effectively against Carmen Basilio and Dick Tiger in their second bout.
luyolo katiya i know not your first choice ,but he had/has a fantastic jab. he didnt have a hook to his name his right hand was alright but left him open....but his jab was a mixture of ike qurtey's ram rod and winky's double jab. he knocked out lingesi with it with the best jab i have ever seen. it was on kotv a year ago. single one shot jab on the chin put him to sleep. broke lengesi's nose and bloodied him to pieces. i have it on my digi box and trying to find a way to put it on to youtube. http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=227340&cat=boxer
Thanks for realising a sincere question there, John. I wasn't familiar with him, so I thought I would ask... now I have something else to read about!
In addition to the above, I think by far, the most underrated jab in recent times was Michalczewski. He had a terrific jab and was he ever accurate with it. It seemed like the guy never ever hit air & lots of guys throw a lot but miss a lot too. Not Michalczewski. And I love the guy that ends a good combination with a stiff jab and just set the table for themselves. You just don't see it all that often. That Michalczewski jab was kind of like the Griffith jab and he'd fire it--untelegraphed--when his feet were in that perfect position and that jab would land full force. The punch would always seem to land at 85-90% extension in there & was never a slapping tpe but always a real stiff jab nobody is going to walk through. And lots of times the other guys would have the reach advantage and be good jabbers themselves. It seems like just the other day that the michalczewski-hill fight was on ABC and everyone knew about Dariusz somewhat but figured Hill to outjab the guy with that mobility and reach advantage and pick and peck style of his. But then you watch the bout transpire on tv & it's the guy with the shorter reach that's outjabbing one of the premeir jabbers. Really an eye opening experience and really makes you take notice of the guy and his tools in there.
Well just at the very time they were speculating he might be the best lightweight in the world (ahead of Camacho, Davis, Rosario etc) he fell from his perch.
Yes i remember that, i was close to ringside for the Tyson v Spinks fight and i remember how stunned i was seeing Buster win like that, he was actually supposed to be the cannon fodder for the younger stronger looking Williams.. I also rate Bruce Seldons jab as incredible.. you may have forgotten how fast he was for a pretty big heavyweight.. Ty Biggs too.... I was a massive Biggs fan..
