Blown up at times or not, looking at records based on their numbers and nothing but is something I do at times. Whether the fighters a world beater or not, what are some of boxings less heralded but impressive records? Shavers was 44-2 at one time, 43 of those wins being knockouts. Juan Carlos Gomez is 43-1 right now, with his sole loss being a freak TKO stoppage. Not too bad considering he was originally a cruiserweight, and he's crept up to ninth ranked in the world as a heavy. Karl Mildenberger was 48-2-3 at one time. Nunn and Moorer both went 35-0 before being beaten for the first time, and Nunn ended his career 58-4. Eh?
The easiest answer would be Jim Braddock, he entered the his title fight with Max Baer at 50-25-7. For a brief period of time the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world had a win:loss ratio of just over 2/3 Granted, he went through a long spell in the middle of his career where he was fighting very often while injured, which may account for many of his losses.
Yeah, Jersey Joe did the exact same thing. Hard manual work on top of fighting, lack of regular meals at times even. You know Braddock was left wanting a meal earlier on in his career. Not to mention how rarely he was stopped, I could care less how crappy his record was all things considered.
Loads of them: Lamar Clarke won 44-0 with 43 straight by KO. Alberto Cortes was 44-0 before losing to the 67-0 JC Superstar Sean O'Grady was 73-1 going into the Watt fight Dan Morgan was once 37-0 Brian Nielsen was 64-1 walking into the Tyson fight.... It just proves stats can lie.
Speaking of Lamar, why in gods name did he just stop fighting post Ali? And I know stats can lie, I just find pure statistics and how fighters get them interesting sometimes.
That's it too, I think. Just impressive how he managed those upsets years apart after everyone thought he was done multiple times.
Sean lone loss then was to Little Red Lopez out in LA and didn't get much coverage back eastward. Sean was too light as a featherweight. I remember I was in Oklahoma City one nite and realized Sean was fighting in the Holiday Inn Ballroom where I was staying. And I think his opponent was one of those guys on the Midwest circuit Terry Atlas is always whining about. Sean's about 5'10" and this other guy probably is about 5' 3" and just jumped off the last boxcar coming thru Ok City. The fight goes about 3 rounds when the opponent takes his first bodyshot and tanks it. Then "the crowd" heads back over to the bar and Papa O'Grady comes over and thanks us for all the "support".
