Lewis-Mercer is not uderrated, everybody knows the fight. If I would list the most underrated heavyweight fight than it'd be: 1. Tommy Morrison vs Joe Hipp: Great action and is zero spoken about. Hipp dropped twice but still manage to give Morrison hell. 2. Bob Satterfield vs Rex Layne: Terrific fight, Layne down by a good punch, almost went down but still manage to kayo Satterfield at the end. 3. Riddick Bowe vs Herbie Hide: Sadly this fight is remembered for being odd. Well you know what? this fight is much more exciting than it was credited for. It has a dramatic back and forth. 4. Zora Folley vs Doug Jones: At least this talked about a little, but not enough... Folley dropped Jones in round one just to get overpowered and outlasted in the end. Great display of skill. 5. Michel Dokes vs Mike Weaver 2: This is a really unknown classic, both equally exchanging punches. Highly recommended. 6. Bert Cooper vs Henry Tillman: Not talk about that much except for this forum, a good swarmer/slugger outpointing a skilled boxer. 7. Jose Ribalta vs James Smith: This fight is f*cking EPIC! both men went swinging. Ribalta dropped early in the rounds got dropped the second time (quite dirtily) by Smith but many believe he turned the fight around. 8. Tim Witherspoon vs Frank Bruno Terrific exchange and good fight. Witherspoon ending Bruno with a big right hand. 9. James Toney vs Samuel Peter 1: Toney trying to tame a non budging, hard punching, caveman like boxer. Exciting and very entertaining fight. 10. Trevor Berbick vs Greg Page: Both beating the crap outta each other but Berbick seems to have got better in the exchange.
Decent shout, that one boasted some fierce back and forth despite Thurman stacking up the rounds — those were the days before Keith undid all his talk about being the antidote to the protect-ya-zero culture by turning into a lame 'businessman'. Fight doesn't seem to be available in full on any of the usual streaming spots, unfortunately. Soto Karass' bouts with Andre Berto, Marcos Maidana and Yoshihiro Kamegai I and II are worth the OP's time, also. Fine shout. Great list, and I'll co-sign that nomination all day. I'm gonna add Mauricio Herrera's bouts with Ruslan Provodnikov, Mike Alvarado and Ji Hoon Kim. Omar Figueroa Jr. vs. Nihito Arakawa was a real slugfest, too. Paweł Wolak vs. Delvin Rodríguez I is a terrific war that was acclaimed in its day, but rarely seems to be evoked by fans a decade later. The return bout (which I attended) was thoroughly underwhelming by contrast, with the rigors of the first fight seeming to damp down Wolak's fire (it was, indeed, his last bout).

This one does seem to be relatively underappreciated, considering it was contested for the true lightweight championship of the world on a HBO World Championship Boxing show. Terrific fight, and an absolute masterclass in fighting with back to the ropes by Márquez. I wrote a florid passage about the 8th round a while back;
