You seem to care more about what Arum makes than the desires of fans. Unless he is giving YOU a portion of his paycheck, I don't see why you hold his ambitions on such a high level of importance. Manny Pacquiao doesn't need any more promotional points. He's as big of a cash cow as one can get. The problem is his amazing skills aren't being truly tested. Casual fans will eat up anything that has Pac's name stuck to it. But why should we let them ruin a sport? The anomaly is they are contributing in a financial sense however they are diminishing the sport by turning it into a pure entertainment industry. They are spending money to solely watch Pacquiao; they aren't doing it to see a great boxing match.

I get the fact that Arum loves money. But if it was all about him, then it might as well be the Bob Arum Show, instead of Boxing. The sport is bigger than any man, doesn't matter if you're Pac, Arum, or Mayweather. You need to reassess your list of priorities. What's more important - getting ideal boxing matches OR seeing a bunch of greedy businessmen laugh all the way to the bank??

    IMHO.

cotto will smash margo to bits, and the victory wont mean much for him. but he was competitive for the first half of the pac fight. at 154 he might be competitive for the second half also.

i had no qualms with pac fighting cotto when he chose to defend vs bum margo, so the margo fight will be irrelevant.

if he does fight and beat cotto at 154 it makes his title more meaningful.

still, the victory will mean nowhere near as much as one over floyd or sergio.

in order i would rate potential victories of his as follows

    floyd
    martinez
    marquez
    dzindzuruk
    cotto
    angulo
    mosley
    cintron
    berto

i'd rather see pac fight a peterson brother before a margo/cotto winner.

pac gets to defend his title against guys he brutally destroyed..wut a joke.

I think Cotto beats Margarito and we get Pac-Cotto 2 later this year. First off, if Margarito does beat Cotto then there is zero interest in that bout. It might make some money strictly off Pac's popularity but after the lopsided nature of the first fight there is no way to sell this fight as being worthwhile in any way, shape, or form. Nobody, besides Pac fans, want to see Pac-Margarito 2.

If Cotto beats Margarito than there is more interest in that fight then the Margarito one. Cotto put up a competitive and exciting first half of the fight against Pac and a rematch would be easier to sell than a Margarito one. Cotto will seem rejuvanated with the new weight, trainer, 154 title, and revenge over Margarito. Pac will be a big favorite but atleast its somewhat sellable. Idealy, if Pac were to fight 3 times this year than I'd have no problem with a Cotto rematch but if he's only going to fight twice than Cotto shouldn't be one of them.

If Pac's 2010 and 2011 consist of Clottey, a fading Margarito, a very faded Mosley, and a Cotto rematch when Pac proved he was superior the first time, then Pac will really be slipping in terms of competition and accomplishments. Beating those guys, for a guy Pac's size, is still a nice run and it keeps him, with Mayweather, as the top guy in his division and atop the pfp ratings. But Pacquaio has/had the chance to do more than be just the best of his current time. Pac has the chance to be one of the all-time greats and his 2010 and projected 2011 aren't helping that cause. I'd like to see Pac push himself as one of the all-time greats not just the best of right now.

That's a great post, and whether it's right or not, it allows us to look at the situation through Arum's eyes.

    And very well said, IMHO.

To some, it will always be about the Benjamins.....first, last and foremost.

I daresay Arum would argue that he's doing what's best for Pacquiao - maximizing profits, limiting risk, etc.

I should think that Pacquiao has final say, and ultimately, it's his legacy.

Doesn't matter who Pac fights, Arum has already proved that he can justify anyone so might as well fight Berto or someone at 154 that can knock someone out with one punch. There is no reason for fighting someone who he has dominated before. JMM is the only one who has fought Pac that makes sense for a rematch because he was very competitive. Anyone else that pac has already faced is BS.

We all know the economic side of the Arum BS but the fact still remains that Arum can match Pac with any current Champ and sell it so why not fight Berto who has been a champ since 08.

If Arum can sell you on these BS match ups then he should be able to sell some decent match ups. He sold clottey so saying he can't sell berto is hypocritical. I really don't think Arum is interested in putting Pac in there with someone fast unless it's for alot of money.

Arum is a great promoter. A nightmare to hardcore boxing fans (like most promoters), because he is by far the best promoter in the world.

From a promoter perspective, you make the Mosley fight. After that, Cotto II. If Top Rank were to sign free agent Berdo, you make that after Cotto 2. You avoid the Mayweather fight, because the outcome is uncertain. You only do that fight if its Pac's LAST fight.

    Good post. :good

It's not difficult to see the "handwriting on the wall", when it comes to Arum. Therefore, I will hold on to my hard earned dollars, and continue to be entertained...for the low, low price of FREE99.
