Briggs and Spinks were undoubtedly undisputed champions.

Erdei is a special case b/c of the long, drawn out dichotomy with dm and rjj now playing out with hopkins not fighting contenders b/c of his age and erdei not fighting contenders b/c he doesnt feel like it.

Correct, plus Lewis went into the Holyfield fight also being the linear champion from the Briggs fight.
With his win he also recieved the IBO belt.

And noone could dispute that Calzaghe - Kessler was the fight to crown the undisputed MW champion. There are many cases actually. Lewis is another

I think you mean Super Middleweight and I think you will find Fulgencio Zuniga, his family and friends would dispute ditto Lansana Diallo with his family and friends.

You slimply cannot have an Undisupted Champion now a days, because there always be someone to dispute it, even Calzaghe's claim.

Lennox was undisputed briefly. It all depends on how the WBO belt is viewed by the masses.:huh

Wrong he was undisputed from the time he beat Holyfield until the time he retired, apart from when he lost the title to Rahman at which point he was the undisputed champ. The WBO belt has never meant anything in the heavyweight division.

In your opinion (mine as well; well actually I just say Heavyweight Champion of the World); but there were plenty of other fighters claiming a title in that time period; thus he was not undisputed...;)

But if you call him Heavyweight Champion of the World surely there is no dispute?;)

IMO, but if you hold a WBO title you are disputing Lewis' claim, thus Lennox is not Undisupted. My argument is that you have to decide as a fan what your formula is to make a World Champion. But understand it will just be your opinion as there is no universal formula to make a World Champion.

So do people holding the WBU but they are no more the champ than Ruiz or Byrd were. I agree with what you say though & its up to us to decide. Everyone recognised Lewis as the Heavywieght Champion & rightly so.

Unified = holding one or more major world title belt in a single weight class (WBC, WBA, IBF, and more recently, WBO) eg: WBC champ unifies with WBA, now holds 2 world titles

Undisputed = being the recognised champ in that division, which doesn't necessarily mean holding all 3 (or 4) belts.

Examples of Unified = Joe Calzahe when he beat Jeff Lacy, he held WBO and IBF SMW belts, Mikkel Kessler when he beat Markus Beyer, he held WBA and WBC belts.

Examples of Undisputed = Joe Calzaghe when he beat Mikkel Kessler - JC was recognised as #1 @ SMW, Kessler as #2, even though JC had been stripped of his IBF belt he was still recognised as the lineal IBF SMW champ, so their fight was for all the chocolates.

Another example of Undisputed - Kostya Tszyu when he fought Ricky Hatton - even though Tszyu had been inactive for some time, and had his WBC and WBA belts stripped (actually, I think he was elevated to Champion Emeritus by WBA, and stripped only of his WBC title, thereby vacating it for Gatti to fight for), he still held the IBF belt. However, he was still recognised as the undisputed champ at 140, which is why Hatton became the man at 140 by beating Tszyu.
