What are some less talked about trilogies+, that don’t get appreciated as much as some of the bigger name battles? I’ll throw a shout out for Azumah Nelson vs Jesse James Leija. From 93-98 these guys had 4 exciting fights with Leija coming out on top 2-1-1 with Nelson scoring the line stoppage. What do you have that needs more appreciation?
Excellent call with Nelson/Leija; I would throw in Monroe/Hagler; not brilliantly exciting fights, but shows the genius of Hagler, as he is initially bamboozled by Monroe (fight one), and then gets to grips with The Worm (fight two), before showing his superiority in fight three.
Vicente Saldivar vs Howard Winstone One of the great and forgotten or seldom celebrated trilogies in boxing...for whatever it is worth in 1999 or 96? ring named thier 2nd encounter as the 65th greatest title fight ever. http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_100_Greatest_Title_Fights_of_All-Time
A quadrilogy (???) that ended in tragedy! From 82-85 Brian Michell vs Jacob Morake. Morake won the first fight with Brian taking the final 3 encounters. Morake would die of a brain hemorrhage following a 12th round KO in the 4th fight. Another horrific boxing tragedy that would devastate the victor and cost the other thier life.
the R. Marquez vs Vazquez wars was some of the most exciting boxing there was … Man they went at it 4 times and they were so evenly matched and you just didn't know what was going to happen. Rivals at their best, technical boxing. 2007 and 2008 Ring Magazine fights of the year. These fights ruined each other. The first 3 back to back to back .. A must see for those who haven't
I agree that was a great quadrilogy, but it is not really unheralded. Frequently talked about and in quite a few top 10 trilogy lists. But these 2 warriors always deserve to be celebrated!!
Betulio Gonzalez vs. Shoji Oguma's 4 fights is a great example of two incredibly evenly matched fighters. First fight Gonzalez by 10 round decision, second fight Oguma by split 15 round decision, third fight draw, fourth fight Gonzalez by KO12.
Lol I plead ignorance, but am adding it to my need to check out list! Good shout! Looks like 2 & 3 are on YouTube...thanks
Tony the Tiger Lopez vs John John Molina although Lopez’s 2 wins are controversial he officially holds a 2-1 lead on their series. Nice contrast of styles
Carlos Ortiz vs Ismael Laguna (one of my favorite non Philly fighters) fought 3 awesome battles with Laguna outboxing Ortiz in the first fight but Ortiz winning the final 2... Here are Ortiz’s thoughts on the first fight: http://www.boxing.com/ismael_laguna_vs._carlos_ortiz_a_star_is_born_april_10_1965.html
Joey Giardello and Dick Tiger split their 4 battles. I don’t know if there is footage of the first 2 fights, but three and four the 2 title bouts are worth checking out
Daniel Zaragoza vs Paul Banke had 3 entertaining fights together. The second fight is probably one of the best fights of the 90s, unbelievable exchanges. Would have been FOTY had it not been for Chavez vs Taylor. Really good fights that no one really talks about unfortunately.
