The modern boxing fan makes a big deal about unification a really new trope. But now the main 4 belts have been unified at HW and LHW I've noticed a tendancy to disregard interim champs even if these interim champs will become normal(NOT "regular") champs if they are ignored long enough. What gives? Why is there no pressure on Beterbiev to unify with Benavdez and Buatsi? Why is there no pressure on Usyk to unify with Dubois/Parker? Whats up with that?
Usyk is the undisputed champ regardless of what any ABC organization says. He should shed as many belts as he likes at this point and continue to fight on as he pleases as lineal champ. He is above the nonsense.
That logic applies to all ABC belts though. I'm asking this of the people who care about "undisputed". I'm not one of them and you're not one of them. But a lot of other posters are.
Interim champs are on standby just incase the real champion disappears from the division. Substitute champion
The champion is supposed to eventually treat the interim champ like a mandatory but this doesn't always happen. Boxing organizations aren't consistent
They were originally for the scenario where the reigning champ was indisposed for a while due to injury etc. When Interim 'champions' started defending interim belts, boxing jumped the shark and became just another step more ridiculous.
I like interim belts because they don't involve stripping champs. In my eyes they are lesser of two evils opposed to stripping champ for nonsense then pretending theres a new champ. Interim champs is actually a honest reflection of the situation.
