After doing a lot of research, I composed my list of universally recognized heavyweight champions. Not to be mistaken with lineal champions - 99% of the time it was the lineal champion who was universally recognized, but there were instances where lineal champions lost public recognition or never really gained it. 1. John L. Sullivan (08/08/1887 - 07/09/1892) [3 title defences] Hard to tell when Sullivan gained championship recognition, also it's hard to call it universal, since boxing was mainly an Anglo-Saxon sport back then, but I'll take the day when he was presented with the championship belt by the people of the USA as the crowning moment. Wladimir Klitschko (16/12/2013 - 28/11/2015) [3 title defences] Klitschko gained universal recognition after his brother Vitali vacated the WBC belt. Wlad was therefore the only HW with the claim to the championship, being the unified WBA, IBF & WBO champion and being recognized as the lineal champion by The Ring (since 2009) and TBRB (from his fight with Povetkin 2 months earlier). 42. Tyson Fury (28/11/2015 - 12/10/2016) [No title defences] (LOST UNIVERSAL RECOGNITION AFTER ABDICATING AND VACATING HIS WBA & WBO TITLES DUE TO BEING MENTALLY UNFIT TO FIGHT) [Vacancy] 43. Tyson Fury** (22/02/2020 - 18/05/2024) [4 title defences] Fury regained the universal recognition after beating Deontay Wilder in the fight which was seen at the time as number 1 vs number 2. 44. Jeffries was the first "undisputed champ". The title was almost always disputed between then and Louis defeating Schmeling in 1938. Jack Sharkey in 1932 being the closest to universial recognition. After this every lineal champ was undisputed for at least a portion of their reign except Jersey Joe Walcott and Vitali. Maybe Ezzard Charles depending on when you start his reign.
Question for Wlad part. Was he not considered the universal champ after he won the best from Byrd before Vitali comeback? Or was he only considered that when Vital retired and he beat Povetkin? Just curious
I took Vitali's retirement day as before that, even tho Wlad was widely viewed as the champ, Klitschkos were perceived as kind of a co-champions. There was no debate who the champ is after Vitali retired.
