recently i have been watching some unlicensed boxing. guys like lenny mclean and roy shaw. how do you people think they would do against the HW of their time ??
hmm i am not so sure of that. i think in the glory days of unlicensed boxing the toplevel fighters where pretty good
I've heard that Lenny McLean was sparring with Billy Aird once at the Thomas a Becket in South London. McLean apparently got a bit serious and Billy just knocked him out. Billy was a good domestic level heavy who fought for the British titles and European title. He also boxed a draw with Jimmy Young in 1973.
Completely different ball game. McLean and Shaw were tough men, but they simply would not compete with even the most ordinary journeyman. Remember that WWF thing (Brawl for it all) a few years back, that Butterbean fought the winner in a legit match? It lasted less than 30 seconds... Cliff Field beat them both (McLean and Shaw) on the unlicensed circuit. And his level in the licensed game wasn't anything special : [url]http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=16601&cat=boxer[/url] Shaw did apparently beat Ron Stander, but even he says he wouldn't have beaten him had Stander not been suffering from broken ribs going in to the fight. Shaw possibly had some degree of ability or talent. He was fighting in his 40s against McLean who was in his 20s, and Shaw was by far the smaller man.
