Armando Muniz - his style required him at peak condition with the physical disadvantages he had at welterweight. When he finally got his shot at Jose Napoles he grabbed it with both hands, unfortunately the deck was stacked against him. With Muniz crowding and Napoles countering in close, they both came out of the infighting with cuts and both were contained (albeit Napoles' corner was using illegal swabs which referee Ramon Beruman ignored). But around the 9th round Muniz changed tactics and began jabbing his way in, which ripped open Napoles cuts. In the 10th he had Napoles hurt, but time ran out in the round. With the crown in jeopardy Napoles changed tactics in the 11th. He began digging low blows into Muniz' twins while the ref just watched (I counted 11). Muniz later said the ref was waiting for Muniz to retaliate so he could DQ him. In the 12th with the cuts severe and no let up from Muniz, the doctor stopped the fight, but the ref said Muniz was guilty of butting in rounds 3 & 5 that Napoles wins on a technical decision. Muniz would go on to garner 3 more title shots but despite his endeavors, kept coming up short.

This was one of the worst displays of partiality - only to be exceeded by the what took place in the first fight between Juan Coggi and Eder Gonzalez.

Harry Wills , the greatest what if in heavyweight history .. many try to dismiss him but he was bigger than Dempsey, far more skilled than anyone Dempsey ever fought, fought and defeated better men than Dempsey did and Team Dempsey absolutely refused to let Jack near him .. I have no idea who would have won but it is and will always be a huge asterisk on Dempsey's resume to me ..

Frankie Randall .. I have have not seen a fighter who had his title stolen like King/Chavez did to Randall in the rematch in a very long time .. it was disgusting and the fact that Chavez had zero interest in giving the man who first defeated him an immediate rubber match tells a ton about the man Chavez became later in his career ..

Damn fine post. The Muniz/Napoles match is something of a forgotten black eye for boxing, even more so if you have a soft spot for Muniz, which I personally do. One of the best all action guys of his era, and that's saying something because he stood besides giants.

That's a really good shout. I'd actually forgotten about that - it was disgraceful and definitely hurt Chavez's rep at that time.

DEMPSEY old slow defensively very week by then, one-punches Sharkey (who himself said there was no way Wills beat Dempsey) and Sharkey stops Wills. DEMPSEY KO 2 Firpo, Wills dec Firpo. Give me a break, Wills loses by KO. They are remembered the way they are for a reason. Revisionist historians are a joke. :)

Wills was 37 when he fought Sharkey, the same age Dempey was when he got slapped around by Kingfish Levinsky .. Dempsey went down three times vs Firpo and should have lost by a TKO stoppage .. do your homework before spewing. Also remember who ducked whom.

    Bruno vs Lewis.
I saw that fight on Youtube and didn´t knew the outcome back then. I couldn´t trust my eyes, but Bruno was beating him up badly and was on the verge of knocking him out, not loading his last shots correctly. Out of nowhere, a left hook came flying....

Well, I don't know if he was unlucky to lose. He certainly fought well up to a point. But then, that tended to be the case with him. He could start strong but not finish the job. He was simply beaten by a better fighter.

Dempsey ducked Harry Greb, 170lbs at most, much less Wills. Personally I think Dempsey beats both in tough wins, but that doesn't matter: he should have fought both of them, notwithstanding the issues he had with his manager.

Dempsey was long retired by Lev. But at the same time the Firpo and Sharkey fights apply. Both faced them within the same time frame. You DEMPSEY haters crack me up. DEMPSEY would have beaten Wills like a drum. Boxing politics kept that fight from happening after Jack Johnson. You know this if you know boxing history. You just want a reason to cap on Jack. Tell the truth man. You'll get more respect.

Dempsey was more active going into Kingfish than Wills was going into Sharkey .. Dempsey was on a massive tour to get back in shape to test himself .. he was fighting in exhibitions constantly .. nice how you can definitively say Dempsey would have beat Wills .. too bad his promoter and his manager , who previously managed Wulls and knew all about him, did not have the same confidence.

I told you the truth and you know I'm right. You'll be respected more if you just admit it.
