im not as impressed as his big fans here. i think ortiz beats him, im sure spence does. he reminds me of broner in how he fights, and im thinking he will handle adversity the same way. when he actually faces some. none of these youngsters are a completed product yet so no telling where they finish out, but theres a couple at 147 that i would consider more likely to rise above the rest than he will.

That all changes soon enough when he steps in with Porter.

So what you're implying in a roundabout way is that Ennis hasn't fought anyone either? :sisi1

I have the sinking suspicion that he's a special talent: So were Keith, Spence, Crawford, at this stage. So is Vergil currently. His first really kinda high quality win was vs. Lipinets, he's only got one moderately high level win so far (and it was a great one). Dulorme was very flawed so that's a good win but not something to proclaim the second coming of Floyd defensively.

We have to see him in with the top level before we say this.

I like Ennis a lot though

There's a lot to work with, but I think there's some room for refinement, both in terms of the manner in which he finds angles and in terms of tightening up his defense and transitioning from defense to offense.

Love Boots, he has all the tools, what I don’t know is can he handle adversity, can he make in ring adjustments at the Elite level, how will he respond to getting hit and not immediately be able to get it back. I don’t know…maybe he’s all time great in all those things, but until we see it it’s hard to say.

He has the potential for sure.
But the statement in itself is just what you called it.
    An unpopular opinion.
We can revisit when the facts come out.
& see if the forecast was legit or not.

He has one glaring weakness against pressure/inside fighting. He becomes a sitting duck either relying on a subpar defense or having to flurry to get guys off him. A guy like Porter beats him. Spence also if he doesn’t get chin-checked. Ennis slowed down considerably after the first vs Eyubov. I’d say it’d take 3 rd’s of pressure for him to be ready for the taking for any top guy. Can’t fight backing up and a limit to his gas tank which will get him in trouble against guys that can take him into deep waters.

He needs to fight someone worth something not coming off a loss/inactivity/prison though. Most protected fighter in boxing right now.

Jaron Ennis is 24 going on 25.

When Sugar Ray Leonard was 24 going on 25, he'd beaten Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran in their rematch, and lost a close UD to Duran in their first meeting while fighting Duran's fight.

I'm sure what ranking Duran held at the time he fought Leonard the first time, but Benitez was definitely in the division's top 10. Obviously there isn't a Benitez or a Duran level fighter at 147 right now for Ennis to fight, and that isn't his fault; but how many top 10 fighters that are around (the likes of Spence, Crawford, Thurman, Porter and DSG) has Ennis fought as a pro?

At 24 and 25 years old, Leonard was fighting the best in his division and daring to be great. Call me skeptical if you must, but I'm just not seeing that same level of ambition from Ennis.

If Porter has already admitted that Ennis is too much, then why isn't Ennis already stepping up to fight guys in the top 10 at 147?

Something doesn't quite add up here.

Exactly. It's easy to look great against guys that allow you to fight your fight. I want to see what happens when his speed isn't a factor because his opponent has good timimg(Crawford). His power isn't a factor because his opponent is too illusive, or his jab is taken away because his opponent times it with a better straight right. What then? Do I think he is a talent.... yes. But, until he is made to make adjustments to compensate for his opponenst skill, I think saying he's the best at 147 is premature.
