What medicore or unremarkable fighters none the less managed to peak and put together impressive strings of victories/
It's hard to know. He never even knocked out a top 100 heavyweight, but even against obscure clubfighters, you'd think that just by chance, at least one would last the distance in 43 consecutive bouts, and surely that at least one would last through the fourth round! However, OLD FOGEY, who saw Clark fight, says that he was really a pretty ordinary-looking fighter and probably didn't actually hit any harder than a Brian London, in spite of his monstrous record.
Totally- aside from his chin and strength, he had no special talents, but through grit and determination he had a very strong run for many years.
Like I said, grit and determination. To cut 40 lbs in weight, without being drained, requires outstandingly high levels of training. The man must have lived like a monk, only with a lot more work towards being able to kick ass.
Yes, that is my opinion. I should add that I saw him fight on TV, not live. He was a good, but not exceptional puncher, with a mauling style. I doubt if he hit any harder than London, for example. His victims were the worst sort of tomato cans. When he went against even an ordinary journeyman, such as Bartolo Soni or Pete Rademacher, fights I saw, they were able to survive his best punches and finish him late. It is interesting that his manager was Marv Jensen, who also managed Rex Layne and Gene Fullmer. Those fighters were tossed relentlessly to the wolves, but Clark was built up against nobodies. I guess it proves Jensen was probably a shrewd judge of boxing talent.
