Elias managed to hold Jofre to a draw in 1965, just looking at boxrec, there is a note about the scoring. Maybe Vic can enlighten us on the Brazilian scorecard.

Cheers Al, much appreciated as ever. I'll get around to watching these asap. Was watching McGowan II again just yesterday, excellent fight. I've also been rewatching a lot of the more recent bantams lately too like Sahaprom, Marquez, Nishioka, Austin, Hasegawa, Donaire, Mares, Darchinyan, Agbeko etc and was thinking that your dad would have built up a pretty impressive record against them all in terms of the win-loss ratio imo. Perhaps Walter too, if cuts didn't **** everything up too badly for him. Interesting medley of various styles to pit their textbook excellence against....

I have and always will be a big fan of the little fellas. I'm sure Walter would have fitted in nicely at any era. I've been lucky enough to see quite a bit of him and he was just a fantastic boxer. Great boxing display against Burruni and more aggresive against Chionoi who I thought he outclassed up until the stoppage.

The Elias fight here though I say it myself is a beautiful bit of boxfighting.

I can't remember if it's the first or second Chionoi fight that I've seen but I'd definitely say that I agree; Chionoi was never the most graceful or innately gifted fighter to say the least, but Walter made him look downright stupid at times. Really unlucky the way those fights ended for him. Wasn't it Buchanan who said that he thought that McGowan was the most skilled British fighter of all time?

I've just watched it, really classy, measured display from your old man. Controlled the distance as well as ever with his one-two and lateral movement but wasn't afraid of digging in either when he needed to. Elias was a very capable little operator (you'd have to be to fight even a diminished Jofre to a standstill) and I was surprised at how well he did here to say that he was approaching the end of his career. Little tank of a road warrior he was, though a bigger punch might have suited his style better against the better operators he faced. The North American title seems to have carried quite abit of prestige much in the way that the British title did back then too.

I'll get round to the Vega fight soon btw....

All I know is what boxrec says : "Eder was ahead by 3 points on all three score cards at the end of 10 rounds. But under Brazilian rules you need a four-point margin to gain a verdict. Eder did not have a four-point margin against Elias, so the fight was declared a draw. "

    Many thanks ! :good
    Great stuff !!!
    I will watch it tonight....

Thanks for posting this, regarding your Dad , as the saying goes "there, but for fortune", he was around when there were giants in the division.
