I think it was more to do with his incredible durability and rope a dope strategy that tired Foreman out that won Ali the fight rather than any quick counter punching handspeed.

Yeah, I think it was stated Spinks used his left as the primary weapon due to qawis rolling and countering being predicated in the right hand usage. You can see it in the footage.

Yes the plan was to hit his head quickly than he could move it. :ggg

How about feinting him so he would move his head then punching where he was going to move that target?

Possibly, watching it though, I had the feeling that Qawi after being hit a couple of times by the right hand became a big more cautious and wary of it and this may have affected the way he fought in contrast to how he normally was in previous fights. He just didn’t seem to fight with as much energy as he normally did.

Which was exactly how everyone saw him when he was matched up against Foreman, Fergy.

It's not hard to look up. The boxing world did not yet realize Hopkins was such a fantastic fighter. Tito was around a 3-1 favorite. The Tito demolition was Hopkins coming out party when it came to mainstream acceptance as one seriously talented middleweight.

    Barrera-Hamed

Barrera had always been a pressure fighter before that but his team recognised that walking down an opponent with Hamed's power was too dangerous and so for that night Barrera kept the fight at range, circled to the left and jabbed.

    It took a long time.

You know what tho? This is ok. It's better than prematurely judging guys well before they have proven themselves enough.

Ali and Holyfield Ken are quite similar in my opinion regarding this. Both looked as if their best days behind em and weren't given much chance at all against the monsters of the division. Yet they pulled off the upsets against the odds. Yet neither was ever really that impressive again. Slaying the beasts always looks good!

Slaying Foreman was impressive because it took a smart head, Ali was never in that shape again and was 32 years old anyway.

Which made it more the impressive imo. Can't think of many 32 year olds beating Foreman as champion. 40 years ago, that age of heavyweights were back end of their career s.

I think that the greatest of all time has to be Tunney over Dempsey. Not only did he stay on the outside, keep him at distance and win every round, but he also deliberately waited years for Dempsey to slow down and lose his sharpness, ensured the shortest disance for a World Title fight ever (which lowered his chances of being knocked out), Had the neutral corner rule in effect (though only needed it in the second) and generally had everything planned to perfection.
