The first British and European 190lbs Champion. Not without class, but lacking top class power and a bit cut prone, Sammy was one of Europe's premier 190lbers in the mid and late 80s. A learning fight defeat apart, it took arguably the second best 190lber of the 80s (Carlos DeLeon) to end Reeson's run. But victories over the dangerous Lithgo (at his best weight); the unbeaten contender Roy Smith, and two top European contenders were the first steps to our first world class 190lber. Reeson would of been a tough match for our other better known top 190lber of the era, the Commonwealth Champ Glenn McCrory. It is shame the match up never happened....
I saw Reeson fight at least twice, one of which was Roy Smith somewhere like Lewisham, Town Hall and i think i saw him fight for the European title. Good fighter. Used to work the doors with Gary Mason
Reeson was smart to get in with Lawless and co, and got a bit of TV time because of it. I remember his European title fights being shown on ITV on a Saturday afternoon and the DeLeon fight was on (as) live on a Wednesday night Midweek Sport Special.
My Dad saw him fight in Battersea Town Hall and said he if he had power he would of won a world title but he could'nt stay off the puff and charlie and before the world title fight against Carlos DeLeon he was messing about and dabbling and done himself out of a chance really. His life has sadly gone backwards and he in and out of prison at the moment. He nice bloke and yet another fighter who's lost without boxing.
That is sad to hear, I hope he gets a good ego boost if he stumbles on to this! As he seemed to come across as a decent genuine fella when interviewed back then!
Yeah he is mate, The drink from sounds is his demon. I know his lad and he lovely kid and i think at the moment Sammy is sadly back inside last time i heard. I got his autograph here. My dad's a hard man to please so when he said someones good he had to be pretty decent
Reeson was more than decent, he was what is known (for those who do not know) as a cutie; in other words, despite not looking like it, he knew how to avoid getting hit, whilst in return land blows. Sadly for Reeson as stated he lacked real power and was perhaps lacking the craft of the best 190lbers. But he still made the most of what he had, and was a fine genuine fringe world class fighter for a couple of years.
Yeah my dad said he sweet boxer lacked the punch and dicipline sadly. It a shame he didn't bring a world title home to Wandsworth. Still being a European champ isn't bad
That's a classic from the attic. Hard to judge if he was any good or not or compare to now as the Cruiserweight division then was new and had a pisspoor reputation. Would've liked to see him against Gentleman Glenn McCrory and suprised that this match didn't get made when McCrory was IBF champ given that Reeson didn't have much pop and McCrory didn't have much chin.
Sammy was the subject of short documentary when he was about 12. He boxed for Brixton at the time. We go back a long, long way. Can somebody send me a message letting me know where he is. I want him on the show. He was a better fighter than people give him credit for. Adios and thanks.
Last i heard sammy worked for crowe scaffolding, dont know if he still does but you could try ringing them.
