Lewis was pretty classless in that interview, to say the least. He gets enormous amounts of love RE this fight.
That was a classic case of the guy that got the worse of it got the win. Not saying they didn't go by the rules in place, it's just that the rules in place didn't work right in this case. I think you had to be generous to give Lewis 2 rounds of the six they fought. Although it did look like Vitali was totally gassed at the end of the sixth. If he had done any body work at all, he could've had Lewis is similar, or maybe even worse shape, but he neglected Lewis' body the whole fight.
Merchant was as classless as Lewis didn't have one good word to say about Lewis. If he had congratulated him at the start instead of trying to make Lewis look stupid we might of got a different interview. I like Larry but he had his own agenda that night imo.
Yep, hate it when people say "Lennox was and is a true gentleman". When it comes to being a cocky ******* and disrespectful towards your opponents only Larry Holmes beats him from the HW champions.
the cut was a legitimate reason to call the fight off... a legitimate win for lewis, who, despite not looking at his best still pulled off a victory against a much younger contender, who is still today no.1 or 2 heavyweight in the world, either him or audley harrison
Fair point, although I think Lewis' "started it" to an extent by immediately dissing Klitschko at the very first question. It's not unheard of for Merchant to ask those sorts of questions in that situation and he reacted to it very insecurely.
Simple case of Lewis treating Vitali like a common tall man, Ie. Be aggressive and hit him, because he will go down. 10lbs lighter for good measure with his usual gameplan would have worked even better, I am certain.
Great fight, thanks for the upload. Lewis seemed quite past it here...or maybe he's just not used to facing someone like Vitali. He was walking him down, taking the punches to land his own, loading up on each one, no way he has a glass chin. They both looked very sluggish, tired and uncoordinated, Lewis looked a lot more fluid in his younger days. Both guys bodylanguage seemed like neither one wanted to be in there.lol.
"I would've knocked him out." lol I forgot how cocky he was but any way you split the pie it's still a Lewis TKO 6 victory.
There should be no contravery about this fight (unless you're that **** Zakman). Lewis hit him in the face and caused an horrific cut and the fight was rightly stopped. If it had contiued I think a Lewis win by stoppage was the likely outcome. Those uppercuts he landed on Vitaly were brutal.
The morons in Vitali's corner made the cut much worse, ripping it open with a towel and pressing hard on it.
You're crazy. He's just at a loss on what to say. It's not brain-damage. And not all fighters get damaged I can name many that come out of the game fine.
The controversy was created by the fans of both fighters. Lewis fans claimed he was coming back and that he would have Ko'ed Vitali within a round or two, and the Vitali fans claim Lewis was finished and that Dr. Ironclaw or fist or jaw had taken his best and was still winning the fight. THat's the controversy. In the end, it was great will it lasted and cuts in boxing happen. What can you do?
Fine from the outside, maybe. Talk to their wives and I'm sure they'll tell you different. I love boxing, but there is no doubt that it damages even the toughest of men. Of course, the effects are a mystery....a bit like smoking. Some men can smoke for their entire likes and live to 99...George burns was pretty close. Others chronic smokers get lung cancer and succumb in their 40s.
