I thought I was in a large group that thought the Cotto Marg fight would play out exactly like it did. The Hopkins Pavlik fight I thought was a much bigger surprise.
Pacquiao-dela Hoya. The odds against Pac were huge and the outcome was just mind-boggling. B-Hop-Pavlik gets second place because of the dominating win. Not surprised he won but the way he won was damn impressive. This year really was one for the upsets.
Many people felt that Cotto would either KO Margo or go to a fairly easy UD...of course there were de-tractors that screamed Margo by KO, but the general belief was that it would go to Cotto. Cotto was seen to be the next guy to rival Pac in the p4p rankings...he was number 4 (even 3 on some lists) and Margarito was nowhere NEAR this list. And when the world witnessed the brutal beating of Cotto people were saying..."he was too small it was so obvious" blah blah blah...but let's face it...in those first 4 or 5 rounds people were thinking...this **** is in the bag for Cotto...then round 6 happened...and the rest was history Same for Pavlik, many people gave B-Hop that chance to be the technician he always is but never really believed in it. Pavlik beat the **** out of his opposition most of the time so many people just assumed that B-Hop would go down for the first time or win to a fairly comfortable UD. The first few rounds played out the way it should because of the fact that B-Hop confuses EVERYBODY in the beginning rounds, it's what happens in the second stretch where people get the best or worst of B-Hop...and that was IT for Pavlik. He didn't do anything different in the beginning or the end. Just took fists all night. But there was no KD or KO Cotto was in the fight of his life and actually took a knee. He was bloodied, beaten, and badly hurt. No one would've though margo would've survived so many shots. I think they're titilating the same level of "HOLY ****"-ness
Hopkins was coming off a close fight with Calzaghe, going into the Pavlik fight. Still the total schooling of Pavlik was the shock. Darchinyan on the other hand was expected to get thoroughly outboxed by Mijares, and people said his only chance was a lucky KO. The Baddest Man on the Planet shocked the world though. Some other surprises Alex Bunema beating Roman Karmazin Cristobal Cruz beating Thomas Mashaba Verno Phillips beating Cory Spinks Timothy Bradley beating Junior Witter Sergio Mora beating Vernon Forrest in their first fight Breidis Prescott KOing Amir Khan (we knew it would happen eventually, but didnt expect it to be Prescott) Juan Manuel Lopez chopping down Daniel Ponce De Leon (not so much the win, but the quick fashion, almost like a death threat had been made)
tough one DLH-Pac - Most felt DLH was going to KO Pacman Mijares-Vic - Most felt Vic wouldnt win a single round Bhop-Hopkins - Most felt Pavlik was going to straight out win and were looking forward to a Cal-Pavlik fight. I say Mijares vs Vic
I will admit I was way off on my prediction of Pavlik over Hop(I even thought Pavlik might get KO). I think it's because I am a big fan of Pavlik, and didn't care much for Hop, and it clouded my judgement. However I am a big fan of both Cotto, and Marg, and I think anyone predicting a KO by Cotto was just a fanboy with clouded judgement like me with the Hop fight. Anybody looking at it clearly saw that Cotto would win early rounds with superior boxing, but as the fight went on Marg would start to break him down. It was a matter of weather Cotto could make it to 12 or not before getting beatdown. I am not trying to brag or act like king **** I just don't think this fight belongs anywhere near an upset of the year thread.
Pac-DLH no question. Most didn't think Pacman would last 5 rounds with Oscar and considered the fight to be a joke. Pacquiao dominated the entire fight and stopped a man who normally outweighs him by 20 lbs.
These 3 and in exactly that order. With Pavlik it wasnt that big of an upset that Bhop won it was more the manner in which he outboxed and shutout Pavlik. With Darchinian he was the underdog but everybody knew that he had the power to change the outcome. With Pac nobody was imagining him making DLH quit or knocking him out.
Presscott-Khan Darchinyan-Mijares Hopkins-Pavlik Pacquiao-De la Hoya That's the order in terms of odds. In terms of high profile, just reverse the list.
