I’d favor Jofre. I wouldn’t favor anyone else, but Gomez wasn’t invincible. I love him, but his chin was always a bit shaky. Granted, his heart normally made up for it, but that’s enough of a liability to keep him from being any kind of sure thing against other greats.
Anyway, I wouldn't pick anyone as I said last week. Jofre is a fair pick, but not one of agree with. I said that I feel like the three guys with the best shot, are Morales, Fenech and Pacquiao. I agree with that, but I'd also like to throw in two curve-ball picks. One is my own making, the other is something I saw on a 2007 thread. The first (the old one), is Sanchez with modern era weigh ins. He could easily drain four lbs with literally no repercussions and still kick Gomez's ass. The second (mine), is Ismael Laguna. I don't think he'd win, but his speed, style, and flavour would give Gomez all sorts of headaches.
Well, if we’re going down that road you could blow this thread wide open. Most fantasy matchups that send a fighter who fought in the same day weigh in era against one who fought in the next day era require a suspension of disbelief. In reality these guys would likely be separated by a couple of (modern) weight classes in the ring. It’s either an unspoken rule that nobody should bring it up or people just completely forget about it when discussing these kinds of cross era fights.
These modern weight drainers would probably be too big for him at 122. So I'd pick Joan Guzman, Pacquaio and Morales probably as they were huge at the weight while being very good. I don't remember him boxing a southpaw so Rigondeaux and Hamed would be tricky styles to figure out. And 122 is Barrera's best weight too. In the old days you got guys who drained and gained weight back, they just weren't quite as scientific about it and weren't as extreme. Still in recent decades you've had Mayweather, Pacquaio and Rigondeaux all not draining to make weight.
