Saad Muhammad getting stopped by Eric Winbush when they were trying to rebuild his career > qawi losses. Or comebacking shavers getting stopped early by Yates.
Good one. The first one that came to my mind when I saw the title of this thread, in fact. To this day, I can't understand how in the hell Rossman was ever able to hang with Galindez. He really wasn't a true light-heavyweight (basically a blown up super-middle at best) and he had just been completely overwhelmed by Yaqui Lopez like he didn't belong in the ring with him.
That's a fantastic one - how many peeps would have plucked this out of the hat. All the wars suddenly caught up with Saad. I don't think he'd ever have beaten Dwight tho, stylistic nightmare and then some.
I don't think Rossman was all that bad a fighter. He probably seemed worse at the time due to the depth of the division of the time. Very short prime though. Galindez was on the way out when Mike got to him anyway.
At his peak -- on his best nights -- Rossman was a pretty good fighter. He actually gave Lopez an excellent fight before being beaten down by Yaqui's two handed assault. There's no shame in that. I think against Ranquello, Rossman was just having a completely off night. Period. But your point about Rossman being a big supermiddleweight is a good one. Physically, Rossman was over his head against the very best lightheavies of his era.
Actually, Mike Rossman is a friend of mine. We both work construction in the Atlantic City area. WHen I see him on jobs, we always talk. When I asked him about the Ranquello fight, he told me he came into that fight with bronchitis and a flu, and was feeling like **** for the couple weeks leading up to the bout. I also worked with his cousin as well and he said pretty much the same thing and that in hindsight, Mike should have not fought that night because of how sick he was, but felt the pressure to go through with it because he was the main event in the first and only fight card to take place in Giants Stadium. If Mike was well, no way Ranquello can do anything with him. I am surprised that people on this post are selling Mike short, like his win over Galindez was a fluke. Mike was a very good fighter. Very fundamentally sound and well schooled, and had very good power. And he wasn't some spoon fed, protected white hope. He fought very tough competition coming up, and although Galindez was on his way down, he wasn't washed up and Mike won a very grueling 13 round war that virtually had no clinches whatsoever. The fight is on you tube actually.
