I mean during this time frame we had guys like Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Floyd, Oscar, and many others. Who do you feel were the most talented US amateurs during this time frame?
Leonard IMO. He looked fantastic in his amateur days, more than the others, I would say DLH is the second...
Howard Davis (132 lbs.) and Clinton Jackson (147 lbs.) were the Top 2 in 1976, Both had terrific amateur careers. And, both were good professionals, despite their flaws.
I remember seeing a clip of Leonard knocking some dude the **** out in an amateur fight - can't for the live of me, remember who it was.
Ray Leonard Howard Davis Leon Spinks Clint Jackson Greg Page Bernard Taylor Jackie Beard Marvis Frazier Tony Tucker Tony Tubbbs. Richard Sandoval.
Leonard, followed by Roy Jones. Both looked so superior to their competition. Sweat Pea deserves a mention, as does Oscar.
For those of you who missed my interview with Emanuel Steward on this subject, he discussed this at great length: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/2012/...-with-emanuel-steward-part-iv-amateur-boxing/
Did he mention Superbadd Mays being more talented than Thomas Hearns, or anybody else he handled ?? He's said this before.
